Chapter 14: The Final Coordinates

The phone screen blinked, replacing the live video feed of her captive father with a set of precise GPS coordinates and a digital countdown timer: 19:58... 19:57...

Sarah stared at the screen, her journalistic bravado completely vanished, replaced by sheer terror. "Maya, you can't go. This is a trap! It's obviously an ambush designed to capture you and recover the flash drives."

"If I don't go, he dies," Maya replied, her voice dangerously quiet, though a fierce, unyielding determination burned behind her thin-rimmed glasses. She zipped up her dark hoodie all the way, securing her silver cross firmly against her chest.

"Call the police! Call the state troopers who just arrested your uncle!" Sarah pleaded, grabbing Maya's jacket sleeve as she turned toward the shattered front doors.

"The syndicate has roots inside the state police too, Sarah. If I involve them officially, the chairman will execute him before they cross the county line," Maya said, her tone absolute and uncompromised. She pulled her arm away gently. "This is between them and me. It always has been."

"At least let me come with you! I can stream the whole thing live, get backup—"

"No," Maya interrupted, her gaze softening just a fraction. "You're a journalist, Sarah. Your job is to make sure the truth survives if I don't come back. Take my flash drive. If I haven't checked in by midnight, upload the entire master ledger to every news outlet in the country."

Without waiting for Sarah to reply, Maya turned and sprinted out through the shattered glass doors into the cool night air. The parking lot was a chaotic scene of flashing blue lights, departing police cruisers, and bewildered teachers milling about. Utilizing the shadows of the parked buses, Maya slipped past the perimeter unnoticed, her sneakers pounding against the pavement as she headed toward her motorcycle parked behind the gymnasium.

The digital countdown timer on her phone ticked relentlessly downward as she sped out of the school gates, accelerating into the dark, winding mountain roads outside town. The coordinates pointed toward an abandoned industrial warehouse district near the edge of the county—a sprawling complex of decaying brick buildings and rusted steel girders silhouetted against the pale moonlight.

As she parked her bike behind a rusted shipping container, cutting the engine into absolute silence, she adjusted her glasses and reached into her jacket pocket. Her fingers wrapped around a heavy, solid metallic object she had kept hidden since the day she transferred.

She stepped out into the clearing, walking slowly toward the towering corrugated metal doors of the warehouse where her father was being held. But as she reached for the rusted iron handle, the heavy doors slowly creaked open on their own, welcoming her into the dark, echoing interior.
