Chapter 15: The Final Reckoning

The interior of the abandoned warehouse was cavernous, smelling heavily of rust, damp concrete, and old oil. High overhead, broken skylights let slivers of pale moonlight pierce the darkness, illuminating dust motes dancing in the cold air. In the center of the vast, open floor sat Arthur Lin, tied securely to a metal chair, his head bowed, his breathing shallow but steady.
Maya stepped across the threshold, her dark zip-up hoodie rustling softly in the stillness. Her thin-rimmed glasses caught the moonlight as she scanned the shadowy rafters above.
"You came," a voice echoed from the darkness near the far catwalk.
A tall, impeccably dressed man stepped out of the shadows, descending the rusted metal stairs with slow, deliberate footsteps. It was Chairman Vance—not the vice principal, but his older brother, the true mastermind of the entire state municipal embezzlement syndicate.
Maya stopped ten feet away, her hands resting calmly in her pockets. Her silver cross lay flat against her black tank top, cold and still. "Let him go, Chairman. This is between you and me."
The chairman smiled, a sickeningly polite expression as he pulled out a polished silver revolver and leveled it steadily at Arthur Lin's chest. "You've been a severe thorn in my side, Maya. Your father tried to play hero, and look where it got him. You should have stayed a quiet ghost in the library corner."
Arthur slowly raised his head, his tired eyes locking onto his daughter's face. "Maya... run. It's a trap."
"He's right, my dear," the chairman chuckled, cocking the hammer of the revolver. "There's no escape. Once I pull this trigger, your father dies, and you will be found holding the weapon as a deranged fugitive."
Maya didn't flinch. Her expression remained completely stoic, unimpressed, and ice-cold. She slowly pulled her hands out of her pockets. In her right hand, she held not a weapon, but a small, unassuming digital transmitter.
"You talk too much, Chairman," Maya said, her voice cutting cleanly through the cavernous space. "You forgot rule number two of corporate crime: always check who controls the local power grid."
Before the chairman could pull the trigger, Maya pressed a single red button on the transmitter. Instantly, every automated backup generator, floodlight, and security camera across the entire industrial park roared to life, blinding the warehouse with thousands of watts of glaring white LED illumination. At the same time, the overhead loudspeakers broadcasted a live, crystal-clear audio feed of his entire confession straight to the state attorney general's secure terminal and every major news broadcast nationwide.
The chairman panicked, sweeping his gun toward Maya, but before his finger could squeeze the trigger, a thunderous crash echoed as federal tactical units burst through the skylights and side doors simultaneously, weapons drawn and laser sights locked squarely on his chest.
"Drop the weapon! Federal agents, drop it now!"
The chairman dropped the revolver instantly, raising his hands as he was swarmed and slammed against the concrete floor in a blur of tactical gear and shouting officers.
