Chapter 2

The scent of stale coffee and industrial lemon cleaner hung heavily in the counseling office. Vice Principal Vance sat behind a scarred oak desk, tapping a heavy silver pen against the wood. Tyler sat in the chair to his left, arms crossed tightly over his chest, glaring furiously at the floor. Maya sat straight-backed in the opposite chair, her hands resting calmly on her lap, perfectly composed despite the administrative storm brewing around her.
"This is completely unacceptable behavior," Vance said, his voice dripping with condescension as he adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses. "Maya, you physically assaulted an athlete on school grounds. Tyler is one of our star students, a pillar of this community. You, on the other hand, have barely spoken two words to anyone since you transferred here in September."
"Assault is a strong word for defending personal property," Maya replied evenly, her tone devoid of fear or defiance. "Tyler invaded my space. I simply ensured he understood boundaries."
"Boundaries?" Tyler scoffed, leaning forward. "You threw me against a wall, you psycho! You act all quiet and innocent, but you're dangerous."
Vance raised a hand, silencing Tyler with a sharp glance before turning his stern gaze back to Maya. "I don't care about your philosophical views on personal space. You are facing a three-day suspension at minimum. And frankly, given your complete lack of disciplinary record, I’m inclined to look deeper into your background. Kids who suddenly snap like that usually have a history of instability."
Maya’s eyes narrowed slightly behind her thin frames. "You wouldn't want to look too closely at my background, Mr. Vance. It might lead you to ask questions about why the school board approved an emergency architectural grant for a gymnasium that was completely renovated just two years ago."
Vance stopped tapping his pen. The silence in the small office instantly grew thick and suffocating. He leaned forward, narrowing his eyes. "What did you just say?"
"I said the gym renovation audit is fascinating reading," Maya continued smoothly, her voice dangerously calm. "Especially the part where the primary contractor shares a private offshore account with a certain high-ranking administrator in this district."
Tyler looked between Vance and Maya, his expression shifting from anger to genuine confusion and alarm. Vance's face lost all its color, his fingers gripping the edge of the desk so tightly his knuckles turned white.
"Leave us, Tyler," Vance ordered quietly, not breaking eye contact with Maya.
"What? Sir, she just threatened—"
"I said, leave!" Vance barked, his voice cracking with sudden panic.

Tyler scrambled out of the chair, shooting one last terrified glance at Maya before slamming the door behind him. Vance waited until the footsteps faded down the hallway before leaning across the desk, his voice trembling. "Who told you about the audit?"
Maya reached into her dark zip-up hoodie, pulled out a small, unassuming flash drive, and placed it gently on the wooden desk. "Nobody told me, Mr. Vance. I found it. And this copy is already scheduled to auto-upload to the state board of education if my student file is touched again."
