Chapter 12: The Frequency Override

A piercing, high-pitched screech suddenly erupted from the federal agents' tactical radios, causing both men to drop their gear in pain and clamp their hands over their ears. The digital body cameras strapped to their chests sparked violently, the screens instantly shattering into a web of static and dying pixels.

Robert stumbled back, his polished composure cracking as he shielded his face from the blinding strobe of electronic interference emanating from the silver cross in Maya’s hand. "What... what is that? Turn it off!" he shouted over the deafening mechanical shriek.

Maya held the open cross high, the micro-transponder glowing with a bright amber LED light. "It’s a hardware-level EMP beacon tuned to the exact encryption frequency of your corporate mainframe, Uncle. Right now, every offshore account, shell company, and hidden asset tied to your name is being wiped clean from the global ledger."

"You're bluffing!" Robert yelled, lunging forward with desperate fury to grab her wrist. "Give me that!"

Before his fingers could graze her skin, Maya sidestepped with effortless grace, tripping him over her extended foot. Robert crashed hard onto the marble floor, his expensive suit tearing as he slid across the shattered glass. Sirens outside suddenly changed tone as the real, uncompromised state police units—alerted by Sarah Chen’s underground student press broadcast streaming live to the governor’s office—swarmed the front entrance.

The heavy oak doors were pushed wide open, flooding the lobby with bright natural moonlight and flashing blue cruisers. State troopers poured into the building, their weapons drawn, but their attention wasn't on Maya. They fanned out past her, swarming directly toward Robert Lin and the stunned federal agents who were still recovering from the audio feedback loop.

"Robert Lin, stay down and put your hands behind your back!" the lead state trooper shouted, pressing the corrupt executive firmly against the floor and snapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.

Robert thrashed uselessly against the troopers, screaming in absolute rage and disbelief as he was hauled to his feet. As they dragged him past Maya, he glared at her with pure venom. "You think this is over? You think destroying my accounts stops the syndicate? They will come for you, Maya! You can't hide from them forever!"

Maya snapped her silver cross shut, tucking it securely back against her black tank top. She adjusted her thin-rimmed glasses and watched her uncle being led away into the cool night air.

Sarah Chen emerged from the hallway shadows, holding her digital recorder out, her eyes shining with absolute awe and disbelief. "Maya... you actually did it. The livestream reached over a million viewers. The entire state government is launching an emergency investigation."

Maya turned slowly to face Sarah, her expression remaining stoic and unreadable. "The game isn't finished yet, Sarah. The head of the syndicate is still out there."

Before Sarah could ask who was left, the main school intercom crackled back to life, playing a chilling, pre-recorded audio file of a voice that made Maya’s blood run instantly cold.
