Chapter 4

Coach Henderson towered over the corner study table, his broad shoulders blocking out the remaining light from the gothic windows. His face was flushed with a mixture of exertion and suppressed rage, his breath coming in short, sharp bursts. Sarah instinctively shrank back in her chair, clutching her press releases tighter, but Maya remained entirely motionless, looking up at the coach with a cold, unimpressed gaze.
"Clear out, Chen," Henderson growled, his voice a low, gravelly rumble that vibrated through the quiet room. "Right now. This is a private conversation."
Sarah hesitated, looking between the angry coach and Maya’s steady, unchanging face. "I have a right to be in the library, Coach Henderson. This is a public study space."
"I said, move," Henderson repeated, slamming a heavy, calloused hand down onto the mahogany table. The wood echoed loudly in the silent library.
Maya slowly stood up, smoothing the front of her black tank top and adjusting her zip-up hoodie. Her movement was deliberate, calm, and completely devoid of intimidation. She stepped between Sarah and the coach, putting herself directly in his line of sight.
"Don't take your temper out on the journalists, Coach," Maya said, her voice steady and clear. "If you have a problem with someone in this building, take it up with the person who actually understands your playbook."
Henderson sneered, leaning down so his face was only inches from Maya’s. "You think you're clever, don't you, little girl? You think a few downloaded files and some petty blackmail make you untouchable. Let me make something crystal clear to you. This town supports its football team. It supports its athletic legacy. People like you—transfers with no family background here—come and go. We stay."
"Legacies are funny things, Coach," Maya replied, her eyes narrowing with intense focus. "They tend to collapse the moment the foundation is exposed to sunlight. Ask Tyler how well his walls held up today."
Henderson’s expression twisted into something genuinely menacing. He reached out, his massive hand shooting forward to grab the silver cross necklace hanging around Maya’s neck. "I wouldn't test me, girl. Sentimental jewelry has a way of breaking during accidents."
Before his fingers could graze the silver pendant, Maya’s hand shot up with lightning speed. She gripped his wrist in a vice-like hold, applying pressure to a specific nerve point. Henderson let out a sharp, involuntary gasp of pain, his massive arm buckling instantly as he stumbled backward, clutching his throbbing wrist.
"Don't ever touch me," Maya whispered, her voice dropping to a chilling pitch.

Henderson stared at her, his face pale with shock and sudden, burning humiliation. He backed away slowly down the aisle, muttering curses under his breath. Sarah stared at Maya in absolute awe. But before either of them could speak, the library public address system crackled to life with an ear-piercing screech.
"Maya Lin," the mechanical voice of Principal Alvarez echoed across the school, cold and unyielding. "Report to the principal's office immediately."
