Chapter 1: The First Crack

The metallic clatter of the school cafeteria faded into an absolute, breathless silence the moment Maya released her grip on Tyler’s blue and yellow letterman jacket. Tyler stood pinned against the cold cinderblock wall, his chest heaving beneath his white t-shirt, his face pale with a mixture of utter humiliation and sheer disbelief. Maya adjusted the collar of her dark zip-up hoodie, her thin-rimmed glasses catching the fluorescent glare overhead. She didn’t blink. She didn't offer a triumphant smirk. Her silver cross necklace lay flat against her black tank top, cold and still.

"What the hell is wrong with you, Maya?" Tyler hissed, his voice cracking slightly as he tried to regain his footing. Around them, dozens of students froze mid-bite, plastic forks suspended in the air.

Maya turned her head slightly, her gaze locking onto his wide, panicked eyes. "You touched my lunch, Tyler. But that’s not really why you’re sweating, is it?"

"You're out of your mind," Tyler muttered, forcefully brushing off his jacket while avoiding the surrounding stares. "You think you're untouchable because you sit in the back corner of the library? You're nothing. Just a quiet ghost."

"Ghosts see everything, Tyler," Maya replied, her voice dropping to a low, deliberate cadence that cut through the cavernous room. "They see who stays late in the coach's office. They see who shreds documents in the administrative annex after hours. And they definitely see who alters the district athletic funding reports."

Tyler stiffened instantly, the bravado draining completely from his features. "Shut up," he whispered, stepping forward threateningly. "Keep your voice down."

"Or what?" Maya tilted her head, her messy bun shifting slightly. "Are you going to pull my lunch tray again? Or are you going to run back to your father and tell him the quiet girl in the library is starting to ask questions about the missing five hundred thousand dollars?"

Before Tyler could formulate a response, the heavy cafeteria doors slammed open with a deafening bang. Vice Principal Vance strode into the room, his face flushed with irritation, fixing his cold, judgmental eyes directly on Maya and Tyler.

"What is the meaning of this disruption?" Vance demanded, marching straight toward them. "Tyler, why are you pressed against the wall? Maya, step away from him immediately."

Maya didn't flinch. She slowly turned around to face the vice principal, her expression completely unreadable as she whispered just loud enough for Tyler to hear: "He's not the only one hiding something in this building, and Vance is about to find out the hard way."
