Chapter 5

The principal’s office smelled of polished mahogany and expensive leather. Principal Alvarez sat behind a massive desk, her hair pulled back into a severe, flawless chignon. She did not look up immediately when the heavy wooden door clicked shut behind Maya. Instead, she slowly finished signing a document, her fountain pen scratching rhythmically against thick parchment paper.

"Sit down, Maya," Alvarez said quietly, finally raising her eyes. They were sharp, assessing, and entirely devoid of warmth.

Maya remained standing, her hands resting in the pockets of her open zip-up hoodie. "I prefer to stand, Principal Alvarez."

Alvarez sighed, leaning back in her leather executive chair and interlocking her fingers. "You are proving to be a remarkably disruptive presence in this school. In less than twenty-four hours, you have physically assaulted a student athlete, threatened a faculty member, and now I have Coach Henderson claiming you assaulted him as well."

"Coach Henderson attempted to physically intimidate me and damaged my personal property," Maya corrected evenly. "And Tyler initiated a physical confrontation in the cafeteria. Witnesses are available if you care to interview them honestly."

"Witnesses are terrified to speak because of the toxic environment you are creating," Alvarez snapped, her cool exterior cracking just a fraction. "You transferred here three months ago from Chicago with glowing academic recommendations, but no extracurriculars, no social media presence, and sealed records. You are an anomaly, Maya. And anomalies cause structural failure."

"Structures fail when they are built on rotten foundations," Maya replied, her voice unwavering. "Like a district athletic budget funded by ghost corporations."

Alvarez’s expression froze. She didn't blink. The silence in the room stretched out like a taut rubber band, vibrating with unspoken tension. Slowly, Alvarez opened her top desk drawer, pulled out a thick manila folder, and tossed it onto the desk.

"You think you have the entire picture, don't you?" Alvarez asked softly. "You think you found a smoking gun on a public server and suddenly you're a crusader for justice."

"I know what's in that folder, Principal Alvarez," Maya said, taking a slow step toward the desk. "I know it contains the wire transfer receipts for the land purchase behind the stadium—land that was supposed to be zoned for public park expansion, but was secretly sold to a private real estate developer connected to your husband's firm."

Alvarez stood up slowly, her chair scraping loudly against the floor. For the first time, genuine panic flickered across the principal's face. She stared at Maya as if looking at a ghost.

"Who gave you that file?" Alvarez demanded, her voice rising in desperation. "Who is working with you?"

May you like

"Nobody," Maya said calmly, her eyes locking onto the principal's terrified gaze. "It's just me."

Before Alvarez could reach for the folder, the office window behind her suddenly shattered inward with a deafening crash, showering the desk with glass fragments as a heavy brick wrapped in a threatening note landed squarely on top of the manila folder.
