Chapter 9

The cold, damp air of the subterranean basement slowly crept into Elena’s awareness, cutting through the heavy fog of the chemical sedative. Her eyelids fluttered, heavy and reluctant, as she tried to piece together her fragmented surroundings. The sharp throbbing in her ribs returned with a vengeance, reminding her of the violent confrontation back at the penthouse.

Elena groaned softly, her hands twitching against the rough fabric of the leather sofa.

"Ah, Sleeping Beauty finally decides to rejoin the land of the living," a smooth, mocking voice echoed from the shadows nearby.

Elena forced her eyes open, squinting against the harsh glare of a single overhead bulb hanging from a frayed cord. Marcus Thorne stepped into the pool of light, holding a glass of amber whiskey in his hand. He looked down at her with a condescending, predatory smirk, swirling the liquid in his glass.

"Where... where am I?" Elena whispered, her throat parched and scratchy. She tried to sit up, but a wave of dizziness forced her back against the cushions.

"You're somewhere very safe, my dear, away from the prying eyes of incompetent police officers and nosy patrolmen," Marcus replied smoothly, taking a slow sip of his drink. "Though I must admit, you've made things remarkably difficult for yourself and for us."

Elena gritted her teeth, ignoring the pain in her ribs as she glared up at him. "You're Marcus Thorne. My father investigated your shell companies three years before he died. He knew you were laundering cartel money through the foundation."

Marcus’s polite smile vanished instantly, replaced by a cold, hardened expression. He set the glass down sharply on a wooden crate with a loud clack.

"Your father was a stubborn idealist who didn't understand the realities of global finance," Marcus said, his voice dropping into a menacing whisper. "And now, you're following blindly in his tragic footsteps. All you have to do is type the master cryptographic key into that laptop over there, and we'll let you walk out of this warehouse unharmed. You can take your little white top and your bruised ribs and go live a quiet life in the suburbs."

"I'd rather die than hand over a single penny of my father's legacy to a monster like you," Elena retorted defiantly, her voice steady despite her physical weakness. "Victoria didn't tell you the truth, did she? The moment I die or the system detects coercion, the master key self-destructs, locking the vault forever with a military-grade burn protocol."

Marcus stared at her, searching her eyes for any sign of bluffing. Finding none, his face contorted with cold fury. He stepped forward, raising his hand to strike her across the face.

Before his hand could make contact, the heavy iron doors at the top of the concrete staircase burst open with a deafening crash.

"FBI! Seattle Police Department! Nobody move!" Detective Sarah Jenkins’s voice echoed down the stairwell, amplified by a bullhorn, followed by the heavy thud of tactical boots swarming the warehouse.
