Chapter 5

A drop of cold sweat beaded at the base of Victoria’s hairline, shattering her cool composure. She stared at the flashing red text on the monitor. The biometric scanner was hardwired directly into the physical DNA architecture of the foundation's trust charter—a custom security protocol designed exclusively by Elena’s late father to withstand hostile corporate takeovers.
"Marcus," Victoria said, her voice dropping an octave as the previous arrogance drained completely from her tone. "We have a complication."
"What kind of complication?" Marcus snapped over the encrypted line, the sound of keyboard clicking echoing loudly in the background. "Did the police intercept the transfer?"
"No, the cops are completely out of the picture," Victoria hissed, furiously tapping the mechanical keys in a desperate attempt to bypass the root directory. "The encryption protocol... it's locked behind a physical biometric anchor. My thumbprint isn't registered in the master root. Only her father's was, and the fallback key was transferred exclusively to Elena's neural profile before he died."
"Then extract the key from her!" Marcus roared, his patience evaporating instantly. "Cut it out of her if you have to! We cannot afford to leave loose ends, and we certainly cannot lose eighty million dollars because you underestimated a grieving kid!"
"She's currently in an ambulance on her way to county general hospital, guarded by a police escort," Victoria argued, her mind racing as she calculated the risks of launching a rescue or interception operation in broad daylight. "If I make a move on her at the hospital, it will trigger an immediate federal investigation. We need a cleaner way."
"Then you have less than fifteen minutes to find one," Marcus warned coldly before abruptly disconnecting the call, the dial tone buzzing sharply in Victoria's ear.
Inside the sterile back of the moving ambulance, Elena lay motionless on the stretcher, her eyes fixed on the ceiling panel above her. The steady rhythmic beep of the heart monitor filled the silence. The paramedic was busy filling out paperwork on his tablet, completely unaware of the digital war raging across the city.
Elena closed her eyes, visualizing the intricate security architecture her father had built into the trust. She knew that Victoria could hack the frontend servers, and she knew that corporate thugs could intimidate her physically, but there was one thing they could never replicate or steal: the private cryptographic seed phrase stored safely inside her own memory, encrypted mentally through a childhood mnemonic device only she and her father ever understood.
Suddenly, the ambulance swerved violently to the left, tires screeching against the asphalt as the vehicle came to an abrupt, screeching halt in the middle of downtown traffic.

The paramedic tumbled forward against the supply cabinet, dropping his tablet with a loud clatter. "What the hell is the driver doing?" he cursed, struggling to regain his footing.
Before he could reach the front cabin door, the back doors of the ambulance were forcefully ripped open from the outside, flooding the interior with blinding headlights and a blast of frigid night air. Standing in the doorway was not a doctor, but a towering man in a dark tactical jacket, his face obscured by a black ski mask, holding a silver syringe.
