Chapter 6

The harsh glare of the high-beam headlights illuminated the chaotic interior of the ambulance, casting long, erratic shadows across the metal walls. Elena’s heart hammered against her bandaged ribs as she stared up at the masked figure blocking the exit. The paramedic stumbled backward, raising his hands in sheer terror.
"Hey! What are you doing? This is a restricted medical transport!" the paramedic shouted, his voice cracking with panic as he tried to shield Elena with his own body.
The masked man didn't utter a single word. With cold, mechanical precision, he stepped forward and delivered a swift, brutal strike to the paramedic’s jaw. The young medic collapsed instantly onto the rubber-matted floor, unconscious before he even hit the ground.
"No!" Elena screamed, trying to scramble backward on the narrow stretcher, but the leather safety straps held her securely in place.
The intruder stepped into the vehicle, the stale smell of ozone and damp wool filling the small space. He ignored the fallen medic entirely, fixing his cold, calculating eyes directly on Elena. He reached into his tactical vest, pulled out a small, pre-loaded medical syringe, and tapped the glass barrel with his gloved thumb to clear the air bubbles.
"Don't fight it, Miss Vance," a muffled, synthesized voice hummed from a voice modulator clipped to the intruder's collar. "It will be much less painful if you simply cooperate."
"Who sent you? Is it Victoria?" Elena demanded, her voice trembling, though she forced herself to maintain a defiant glare. "She'll never get the money! Even if you kill me, the trust dissolves automatically within twenty-four hours!"
The masked man paused, the needle hovering inches from her exposed forearm. He tilted his head slightly, as if receiving a direct transmission through an earpiece. A soft electronic chime beeped quietly beneath his collar.
"Ms. Vance doesn't want you dead yet," the intruder replied coldly, pressing the tip of the needle against her skin. "She just needs a prolonged, medically induced absence so the board can ratify the emergency asset transfer in your absence. Pleasant dreams."
Before Elena could scream, the cold bite of the sedative pierced her veins. A sudden rush of liquid fire surged up her arm, instantly numbing her fingertips and radiating outward through her chest. Her vision began to blur around the edges, the harsh white lights of the ambulance fracturing into kaleidoscope rings of color. Her breathing slowed involuntarily, and the rhythmic beep of the heart monitor began to stretch out into agonizingly long intervals.
As her eyelids grew unbearably heavy, the doors of the ambulance slammed shut from the outside, plunging her into total darkness as the vehicle lurched forward into the night.

Meanwhile, back at the penthouse, Victoria Vance stared in disbelief at her laptop screen. The progress bar for Project Override had suddenly frozen at 91%, replaced by a glowing amber warning box: Security Protocol Activated: Remote Hardware Disconnected.
Victoria slammed her fist down onto the mahogany desk, shattering a ceramic pen holder into dozens of sharp fragments. "Damn it all to hell," she muttered, grabbing her secure satellite phone to dial Marcus. "We lost the direct data link. The kid's ambulance just went off-grid."
