Chapter 1

The sharp sting of the polished hardwood floor pressed against Elena’s back, sending a jolt of pure agony through her bruised ribs. Her long brown hair sprawled across the light-colored surface like a shattered halo, mingling with the sticky, amber-colored syrup spilled from a shattered crystal decanter nearby. She squeezed her eyes shut, drawing in a shaky, shallow breath as the raw pain paralyzed her limbs.

Standing directly above her was Victoria Vance, tailored in an immaculate, razor-sharp black business suit that radiated cold authority. Victoria’s face was locked in a mask of unrelenting fury, her knuckles white as she glared down at the helpless young woman.

"Give me the trust code!" Victoria snarled, her voice slicing through the tense silence of the penthouse apartment like a razor blade.

Elena groaned, pressing her hand against her throbbing side. "I won't do it, Victoria. You've already destroyed enough lives for your greed."

"Greed?" Victoria laughed, a harsh, humorless sound that echoed off the high glass windows. "That money belongs to the Vance Foundation, not some naive girl playing moral guardian! You are bleeding out on my floor, Elena, and nobody is coming to save you. Type the override sequence into that terminal right now, or what happened to your ribs will look like a gentle massage compared to what I do next."

"You can threaten me all you want," Elena whispered, tears of pain spilling over her lashes as she slowly shook her head. "My father left that fund to protect people from monsters like you. I'll take the code to my grave."

Before Victoria could lunge forward to deliver another blow, the heavy front door was violently shoved open. A young male police officer in a crisp blue uniform rushed into the living room, his hand hovering instinctively over his holster. He scanned the chaotic scene—the spilled liquid, the injured woman, and the corporate executive looming over her.

The officer unclipped his shoulder radio, his eyes narrowing as he called for immediate backup while stepping between Victoria and Elena.

"Freeze! Police department! Step away from her right now, or you're under arrest!"

Victoria’s expression shifted in a fraction of a second from murderous rage to serene, practiced innocence. She smoothed the lapel of her black suit jacket, offering the armed officer a warm, disarming smile that completely masked her malice.

"Officer, thank goodness you're finally here," Victoria lied smoothly, pointing a manicured finger directly at Elena on the floor. "This unstable young woman broke into my apartment, vandalized my property, and slipped on some spilled juice while trying to attack me. I was merely defending myself and trying to keep her safe until help arrived."
