Chapter 9: The Horn of Alarm

The deep, mournful blast of the iron alarm horn reverberated through the capital, shattering the morning peace. In the training courtyard, Lyra dropped her wooden sword, her instincts screaming danger. Master Gareth drew his real steel blade immediately, his eyes scanning the high stone walls surrounding the compound.
""Stay close to me, Your Highness,"" Gareth commanded, his voice steady and battle-tested.
Within moments, royal guards rushed into the courtyard in full chainmail armor, their shields clattering as they formed a defensive perimeter. King Alistair and Queen Valoria arrived from the interior corridors, their earlier argument forgotten in the face of an immediate external crisis. Alistair’s face was pale, but his expression was resolute as he drew a ceremonial dagger from his belt.
""Report!"" Alistair shouted to the captain of the guard, who was sprinting across the courtyard.
""My Lord, the western watchtowers have fallen,"" the captain gasped, breathing heavily. ""A rebel army—led by the warlord Kaelen—has breached the outer gates. They bypassed our patrols using mountain paths we thought impassable. They are already in the lower market district.""
Lyra stepped forward, her hand resting over her chest where the phoenix tattoo thrummed with a fierce, restless heat. ""They aren't just attacking the city,"" she said, her voice cutting through the panic. ""They are coming for me. The mark... they know what it means.""
Valoria looked at the young girl, a sudden realization dawning on her. ""If they capture you, the legitimacy of the crown dies with you. They will use you to tear down everything we have built.""
""Then we don't give them the chance to capture me,"" Lyra replied fiercely, turning to Master Gareth. ""Give me a real sword.""

Alistair stepped between them, his eyes filled with a mixture of fear and pride. ""No, Lyra. You are the heir to the throne, not a frontline soldier. Your duty is to survive, to ensure the Solarii bloodline endures.""
""My survival means nothing if the people in the lower districts burn!"" Lyra retorted, her brown eyes flashing with a light that seemed to mirror the magical fire within her chest. ""I spent fourteen years among those people. I will not hide in a tower while they pay the price for my crown.""
