Chapter 3: The Weight of the Crown

Dawn broke over the spires of capital city, casting long, golden shadows across the cobbled courtyards where merchants were already setting up their stalls. Inside the royal apartments, however, the morning light brought no sense of calm. Lyra stood before a full-length gilded mirror, staring at her own reflection in sheer disbelief. The bruised, exhausted scullery maid was gone, replaced by a young woman draped in deep crimson velvet, her wet brown hair now brushed out into glossy waves that fell past her shoulders. Yet, despite the finery, she felt entirely naked without the heavy armor of invisibility that her old rags had provided.

A soft knock interrupted her thoughts, and King Alistair entered, leaning slightly on an ebony cane. He smiled warmly, though dark circles under his eyes spoke of a sleepless night spent reviewing old royal charters and council decrees.

""The high council has requested an immediate audience,"" Alistair said gently, stopping a few feet away so as not to overwhelm her. ""They are demanding an explanation for yesterday's display in the grand hall. They call the phoenix mark a trick of dark sorcery, an insult to the kingdom's traditions.""

Lyra turned away from the mirror, her fingers instinctively brushing against the fabric covering her chest where the magical tattoo still radiated a comforting, steady heat. ""Let them look. Let them call it what they want. I am still the same person who scrubbed their stone floors yesterday.""

""You are a princess of the realm,"" Alistair corrected firmly, stepping closer. ""And the blood of the Solarii does not bow to fearful old men. But I must warn you, Lyra—adapting to court life will require a different kind of strength than surviving the kitchens. Here, the daggers are hidden behind smiles, and poison is poured into cups of polite conversation.""

""I know how to spot a threat,"" Lyra replied, her eyes hardening with the defensive survival instinct honed over years of abuse. ""In the kitchens, you learn to watch every hand that reaches for a knife.""

Alistair placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. ""We will face them together. But before we step into that council chamber, there is something you must understand about the magic that chose you. The phoenix does not merely mark royalty; it awakens when the kingdom faces an existential threat. Its fire is meant to protect, but it can also consume those who do not learn to control its fury.""

With a deep breath, Lyra nodded, signaling her readiness to step out of the shadows and into the blinding light of her true heritage.
