Chapter 8: Secrets of the Archive

While Lyra trained in the courtyard, King Alistair sat in the dim, dusty depths of the royal archive, searching through iron-bound ledgers that had not been opened in decades. The room smelled of crumbling parchment and dried ink. He carried a single iron lantern, casting long, wavering shadows against the towering shelves of forgotten history. He was looking for the missing records of the night the nursery burned fourteen years ago—the night his daughter was stolen away.
A soft rustle behind him made him turn sharply. Queen Valoria stood in the doorway, her silhouette framed by the faint light of the corridor. She stepped into the archive, her footsteps silent against the stone floor.
""You are still chasing ghosts, Alistair,"" she said quietly, crossing her arms against the chill of the underground room.
""I am chasing the truth,"" Alistair replied without looking up from the ledger he was examining. ""For fourteen years, you told me the fire was an accident caused by a faulty hearth. But these records... they tell a different story. The seals on the nursery doors were broken from the inside, not by fire, but by human hands.""
Valoria walked slowly toward him, her expression unreadable. ""The council wanted stability, Alistair. You were broken by the grief of losing your child. Someone had to make the hard decisions to keep the kingdom from tearing itself apart in the chaos.""
""By condemning my daughter to a life of servitude in our own sculleries?"" Alistair snapped, slamming the ledger shut with a force that sent a cloud of dust billowing into the air. He turned to face her, his eyes blazing with a fury she had rarely seen. ""You didn't just protect the throne, Valoria. You secured your own power by erasing my blood.""
""I secured a kingdom that otherwise would have drowned in blood!"" Valoria fired back, stepping close, her voice rising in defensive anger. ""Do you think the high lords would have accepted a grieving king and a phantom princess? They would have carved this realm into pieces within a month! I made the sacrifices you were too weak to make!""

Alistair looked at his wife, realizing the gulf between them was now unbridgeable. ""You didn't make a sacrifice, Valoria. You committed a betrayal.""
Before Valoria could reply, a sudden, violent tremor shook the castle foundations. Dust rained down from the vaulted ceiling, and the distant sound of a horn echoed through the stone corridors—a warning cry that chilled them both to the bone.
