Chapter 10: Breach at the Gate

Chaos erupted in the lower market district as heavy wooden stalls were overturned and colorful awnings caught fire, sending thick black plumes of smoke billowing into the gray sky. Warlord Kaelen led his vanguard through the smoking ruins, his heavy broadsword resting casually across his shoulder. Rebel fighters swarmed the cobblestone streets, overwhelming the outnumbered royal garrison stationed outside the inner citadel walls.

From the high ramparts of the inner gate, Lyra watched the devastation unfold below. The heat of the burning market seemed to resonate with the magical phoenix mark on her chest, sending waves of intense warmth through her entire body. She gripped the hilt of the steel sword Master Gareth had finally entrusted to her, her knuckles white.

""They are scaling the inner portcullis!"" a guard shouted, pointing down toward the massive iron gate where several rebel fighters were hammering away with heavy battering rams.

""Archers, draw!"" Alistair commanded from the command platform, his voice carrying surprising authority despite his age. Volleys of arrows rained down from the battlements, forcing the rebel vanguard to scatter temporarily, but the sheer momentum of Kaelen's forces was relentless.

Knowing that arrows alone would not hold the breach, Lyra made a split-second decision. She turned and sprinted toward the stone stairs leading down to the inner gatehouse, ignoring the frantic calls of King Alistair and Queen Valoria to turn back.

When she reached the lower courtyard, the heavy iron portcullis groaned under a massive impact from the outside. With a deafening crash, the wooden reinforcement beams shattered, and the gate began to buckle inward. Rebel fighters poured through the opening, weapons drawn, shouting battle cries that echoed off the stone walls.

Lyra stepped forward, standing alone in the center of the courtyard. As she drew her sword, the phoenix tattoo across her chest burst into brilliant, blinding life, casting a golden aura that illuminated the dark stone archway. The advancing rebels froze in their tracks, lowering their weapons as the sheer, overwhelming majesty of the ancient royal magic washed over the courtyard.

Kaelen pushed his way through the front ranks of his fighters, his eyes widening in absolute shock as he stared at the young woman standing before him, radiating the undeniable fire of the true Solarii bloodline.
