Chapter 5: Echoes of the Past

That evening, Lyra found herself wandering the labyrinthine corridors of the upper castle, far away from the stifling atmosphere of the council chambers. The stone walls here were lined with heavy tapestries depicting centuries of royal history—battles won, treaties signed, and faces of kings and queens long turned to dust. She stopped before a large, scorched section of the wall near the eastern wing, a stark reminder of the fire that had supposedly ended her life fourteen years ago.
Footsteps echoed softly behind her. She turned to see Queen Valoria approaching. The queen wore a simple dark blue gown, stripped of the elaborate ornaments she usually wore, making her look surprisingly vulnerable. For a long moment, neither woman spoke. The air between them was thick with unspoken tension, years of unspoken resentment, and the bitter reality of a mother who had unknowingly tormented her own stepdaughter for the amusement of the court.
""You look remarkably like your mother,"" Valoria said quietly, her voice devoid of its usual sharp authority. ""Elena had that same stubborn fire in her eyes, refusing to break no matter how heavy the burden became.""
Lyra crossed her arms, keeping a safe distance. ""You didn't care about my mother when you poured that water over my head. You wanted to humiliate me. You wanted to prove to the council that I was nothing more than a stray animal.""
Valoria flinched, the admission hanging heavily in the air. ""I wanted stability,"" the queen defended defensively, though her voice lacked conviction. ""When the fire took you—or so we were told—the kingdom fractured. Civil war loomed on the horizon. I married your father to stitch the bleeding borders together. I built an empire of order out of ash and grief. And then you walked back into my halls, a reminder of everything I had tried to bury to keep the peace.""
""Order built on lies is just a prison,"" Lyra replied sharply, stepping closer. ""You traded my life for your control. You watched me scrub the floors you walked on, and you never once wondered who I was.""
May you like
""Because I was afraid of what it meant,"" Valoria confessed, her facade finally cracking as a single tear escaped down her cheek. ""If you were alive, it meant the past was not dead. It meant the ghosts I had fought so hard to silence were returning to demand a reckoning.""
Lyra looked at the queen, seeing not a cruel tyrant, but a broken woman who had sacrificed her soul for a crown. ""The ghosts are here, Your Majesty. And they aren't going away.""
