Chapter 12: The Turning Tide

Kaelen stood in silence for a long moment, the heavy broadsword feeling suddenly burdensome in his grip. The rebel fighters behind him murmured anxiously, waiting for a command to attack or retreat. They had expected a skirmish against corrupt guards, not a confrontation with a living legend that defied everything they had been led to believe.

""And what assurance do we have,"" Kaelen finally asked, his voice subdued, ""that once the gates are secured, the council will not simply return to their old ways of bleeding the provinces dry?""

Lyra stepped forward, her sword lowered slightly, though her eyes remained locked onto the rebel leader. ""Because the council no longer rules,"" she declared, her voice echoing off the stone walls with absolute finality. ""My father and I will audit every ledger, rebuild every market, and ensure that the wealth of this realm serves the people who toil for it, not just the lords who sit in comfort.""

Queen Valoria, who had descended the stairs to stand beside Alistair, nodded slowly, her expression humbled. ""She speaks the truth,"" Valoria added, her voice carrying a rare, genuine sincerity. ""The era of hidden corruption is over. We have all made grave mistakes, but we have a chance to rebuild something better from the ash.""

Kaelen looked at the queen, then back to the young princess whose chest still radiated the warm, golden light of the phoenix. He slowly unbuckled his sword belt, letting the heavy weapon drop to the cobblestones with a dull, echoing thud.

""If you break this promise,"" Kaelen said quietly, meeting Lyra's gaze without flinching, ""the fire you carry will not protect you from what we will do.""

""I don't intend to break it,"" Lyra replied.

Behind Kaelen, several rebel commanders hesitated, then slowly lowered their weapons in unison. The immediate threat of civil war in the courtyard dissolved not into a bloodbath, but into an uneasy, hopeful truce. However, inside the high council chambers, Lord Chancellor Vane and his loyalists were watching from a high gallery window, their faces twisted in bitter desperation as they realized their control over the kingdom was slipping away for good.
