Chapter 4: The Council Chamber

The high council chamber was a circular room dominated by a massive obsidian table around which sat twelve lords and ladies, their expressions carved from stone. When the heavy iron-bound doors swung open, every head turned. King Alistair entered first, his posture straight, his head held high with renewed vigor. A step behind him walked Lyra. She wore no crown, nor did she carry any weapon, but the quiet dignity in her stride and the faint, unmistakable aura of authority made several council members involuntarily shift in their seats.
Lord Chancellor Vane, an aging aristocrat with eyes like chipped flint, cleared his throat loudly to break the silence. He did not rise from his high-backed chair. ""Your Majesty,"" Vane began, his voice dripping with condescension. ""We permitted this theatrical display yesterday out of respect for your grief. However, bringing a common kitchen orphan into our deliberations dressed in royal velvet is an insult to the dignity of this court.""
""Careful, Vane,"" Alistair warned, his voice low and dangerous as he took his seat at the head of the table. ""You speak of my flesh and blood. The true heir to the throne.""
""A convenient fairy tale,"" interrupted Lady Caelia, leaning forward, her silk sleeves rustling. ""A glowing tattoo upon a scullery maid proves nothing of royal lineage. Charlatans and street magicians have fooled kings before with parlor tricks and chemical dyes. If the true princess survived the fire fourteen years ago, where has she been hiding? And more importantly, why did Queen Valoria's cleansing water trigger this supposed miracle?""
Lyra stepped forward before the king could speak. Her voice, clear and steady, cut through the murmurs of agreement among the lords. ""It was not a parlor trick, Lady Caelia. You are welcome to test the fire yourself, if you doubt its source.""
Silence fell over the room. Lyra unclasped the top button of her crimson tunic just enough to reveal a sliver of the golden phoenix crest, which flared briefly with a brilliant, blinding intensity that forced several council members to shield their eyes. The sheer atmospheric heat in the room rose noticeably, causing candles in the wall sconces to flicker wildly.

""The fire of the Solarii,"" Vane muttered, his face turning pale as he recognized the ancient signature of true royal blood that no impostor could ever forge. ""It... it is impossible.""
""Nothing is impossible when truth reclaims its rightful place,"" Alistair declared, slamming his hand onto the table. ""The succession is restored. And the first decree of this restored line will be a full audit of the castle's administration, starting with the treatment of its servants.""
