Jax pulled over to the side of the street, the engine idling quietly. He opened the metal box with hands that wouldn't stop shaking. Inside were medical bills, a few old keys, and a stack of letters addressed to him—letters Sarah had written over the years but never sent.
The top letter was dated eight years ago, the week Leo was born. He has your eyes, Jackson, it read. I wanted to hate you, but I can't. I just hope one day you find the peace you were looking for.
A single tear hit the paper. Jax looked at the rearview mirror. Leo and Maya were already fast asleep, exhausted from days of hunger and fear.
