Chapter 2: A Quiet Retreat

The elegant patrons in the café began to whisper, sensing the sudden drama. Jax knew this wasn't the place for a family reckoning. He turned to the blonde waitress, whose suspicious glare had softened into quiet confusion.

""Pack everything in the display case,"" Jax said, handing her his black metal card. ""Put it on my tab.""

He then knelt in front of the young boy, keeping his distance so as not to startle him. ""My name is Jax,"" he said gently. ""What's your name, son?""

""Leo,"" the boy said, pulling his toddler sister a little tighter. ""And this is Maya.""

""Alright, Leo,"" Jax said softly. ""Let's get out of the cold first.""
