Chapter 5 - The Cloud Backup

The heavy silence in the foyer felt heavier than lead as the lead officer’s gaze shifted from Julian to Eleanor, then finally rested on the silver flash drive in Clara’s hand. Eleanor’s composure finally fractured completely. She took a stumbling step backward, her emerald green dress catching on the edge of the antique console table, almost causing her to lose her balance. The calculated charm that had shielded her for years was entirely gone, replaced by a cornered animal’s frantic desperation.
“She’s lying,” Eleanor choked out, her voice cracking with a high-pitched, hysterical edge that completely contradicted her previous calm demeanor. “She broke into our home! She stole that flash drive from my private jewelry box! Officer, arrest her right now! You don’t have a right to be in my house without a signed hard copy of the magistrate’s order!”
The officer ignored Eleanor’s shrieking completely, stepping closer to Clara. “What is on that drive, Miss?” he asked, his tone professional and steady.
“Everything,” Clara replied, her voice firm and unwavering. She looked directly at Julian, her eyes softening with a genuine, heartbreaking sorrow. “Mr. Vance, I didn’t want to believe it either. For six months, I thought I was just losing my mind, misplacing things, hearing things in the walls. But Eleanor isn't just lying about tonight. That baby... that baby sleeping in your study isn't yours.”
Julian staggered backward as if he had been physically struck in the chest. The air rushed out of his lungs in a sharp gasp. “What... what did you just say?” he whispered, the room spinning around him. “That’s insane. He has my eyes, my—my family line—”
“He’s adopted, Julian,” Clara said quietly, stepping forward and extending the flash drive toward the officer, who reached out and accepted it. “Or rather, he was illegally purchased through a private broker using falsified maternity documents while you were away on those extended business trips to Zurich. Eleanor lost the biological child you both expected six months ago. Instead of telling you the truth, she paid a desperate mother thousands of dollars in cash to walk away, and then framed me as an unstable threat to keep me quiet when I stumbled onto the adoption papers in her desk.”
Eleanor lunged forward with a sudden, animalistic screech, aiming her hands directly at Clara’s face, completely abandoning all pretense of dignity. “I’ll kill you!” she screamed, her fingers clawing at empty air as the second police officer reacted instantly, grabbing Eleanor by both arms and slamming her wrists behind her back with a sharp click of steel handcuffs.

Julian stood frozen in the center of the foyer, looking at his wife of five years as if she were a total stranger. The baby let out a loud, piercing cry from the study down the hall, breaking the frozen spell of the nightmare unfolding around them.
