Chapter 2 - The Missing Footage

Julian’s eyes remained fixed on the glowing red light of the security camera for a long, agonizing moment. The silence in the backyard suddenly felt deafening, broken only by the rhythmic splash of the pool water against the tiles. He shifted the baby securely in his arms, feeling the infant’s warm, steady breathing against his chest, a stark contrast to the absolute freezing chaos surrounding them. Eleanor’s face flushed a violent shade of crimson as she followed his gaze upward. In a fraction of a second, the triumphant sneer vanished from her lips, replaced by a fleeting, panicked flash of sheer terror before she managed to mask it behind a calculated mask of outrage.

“Don’t you dare look at that thing,” Eleanor snapped, her voice pitching slightly higher than normal as she stepped deliberately into Julian’s line of sight, blocking his view of the camera. “Are you actually considering her word over mine? After everything we’ve built? She’s a desperate employee trying to save her own skin, Julian. If you check that feed, you’re telling me you don’t trust your own wife.”

Julian blinked, lowering his gaze from the lens to meet Eleanor’s intense, demanding stare. The hesitation in his eyes was palpable, a silent war waging between the chilling plausibility of Clara’s frantic defense and the deeply ingrained habit of believing his wife. Clara remained on her knees, shivering violently, her wet uniform sticking uncomfortably to her ribs, but her eyes never left Julian’s face. She knew, with every fiber of her being, that the digital eye mounted above them was their only impartial witness. It had recorded every second of the confrontation, every movement in the dark, and every calculated step Eleanor had taken before the screaming started.

“I just want to know the truth,” Julian said quietly, his voice dangerously neutral. He took a deliberate step toward the backdoor, moving past Clara without looking down at her again. “If there’s nothing to hide, Eleanor, then reviewing the footage shouldn’t bother you in the slightest. Let’s go inside and check the monitor in the study.”

Eleanor’s breath hitched, though she covered it remarkably well with an indignant scoff. “Fine. Go ahead. Waste your time watching a glitchy hard drive while our son is freezing out here in the night air. But don’t expect me to stand there and watch you dignify her insane accusations.”

Clara scrambled to her feet, her legs shaking under the sudden rush of adrenaline and exhaustion. She stumbled forward, desperate to follow them inside, to ensure the file wasn’t mysteriously corrupted or deleted before Julian laid eyes on it. But before she could cross the threshold of the glass sliding door, Eleanor spun around with surprising speed. With a sharp, forceful shove directly against Clara’s bruised shoulder, Eleanor slammed the heavy glass door shut right in Clara’s face, locking the deadbolt with a sickeningly loud metallic click that echoed across the patio.

Clara slammed her palms against the glass, crying out as she watched Julian turn the corner down the hallway toward the study, completely unaware that Eleanor had just slipped her hand into the pocket of her green dress and pulled out a small, blinking master control remote.
