Chapter 13 - The Flashbulb Storm

The blinding glare of a dozen camera flashbulbs tore through the darkness of the front courtyard, turning the quiet suburban street into an instantaneous media circus. Microphones thrust forward on long carbon-fiber poles, and reporters shouting rapid-fire questions battered the perimeter fence like waves against a stone cliff. The federal agents instantly formed a protective human wall around the doorway, shielding the agent carrying the infant from the aggressive pack of journalists hungry for a sensational headline.

Julian stumbled out from the backyard patio into the blinding light, shielding his eyes with a trembling hand. His wet grey shirt clung tightly to his shivering frame, and the raw exhaustion of the night weighed down every single muscle in his body. He spotted the agent descending the front steps with the baby cradled safely in his arms. Julian took a desperate step forward, his hands outstretched, begging silently for his son.

“Mr. Vance! Is it true your wife ran a baby-trafficking ring out of this estate?” a female reporter shouted, shoving past a police barricade with a flashing camera inches from Julian’s face. “Did you know about the illegal adoption syndicate funded by your company accounts?”

Julian opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out. His throat was entirely dry, his mind numb from the relentless onslaught of betrayals, revelations, and trauma.

The lead federal agent stepped directly between Julian and the press pack, holding up a commanding hand. “No statements at this time. The investigation is ongoing. Stand back.”

The agent carrying the infant paused at the bottom of the steps, looking down at Julian’s desperate, tear-streaked face. The rules of federal protocol were rigid and unforgiving, but the human element of the tragedy was impossible to ignore. The agent slowly knelt down, extending the bundled infant toward Julian’s trembling arms.

“Hold your son, Mr. Vance,” the agent said quietly, his voice pitched below the din of the reporters shouting in the background. “Child services will need to assess the legal guardianship tomorrow morning, but right now... he’s yours to hold.”

Julian’s arms shook violently as he gathered the warm, breathing bundle against his chest. The baby let out a soft, contented sigh, pressing tiny fists against Julian’s wet shirt, completely oblivious to the flashing cameras and the nightmare surrounding them. Tears spilled over Julian’s lashes, tracking hot lines down his cold cheeks as he buried his face in the soft white blanket.

Off to the side, Eleanor was being led toward an unmarked federal van in heavy zip-ties. She turned her head one last time, locking her cold, venomous eyes onto Julian holding the baby. She didn't scream or curse; she simply offered him a slow, mocking nod before ducking into the dark interior of the vehicle, the heavy door slamming shut with a finality that echoed like a gunshot.

Clara stood a few feet away near the edge of the driveway, quietly watching the scene unfold, her arms wrapped tightly around herself to ward off the chill of the night. Julian looked up from the baby, his eyes meeting Clara’s across the space between them. He opened his mouth to express a debt of gratitude that words could never possibly measure, but before he could utter a single syllable, the baby monitor in his pocket buzzed loudly, broadcasting a chilling, metallic voice that did not belong to any living person in the courtyard.
