Chapter 10 - The Pool’s Dark Mirror

The cool night air hit Julian like a physical wall as he burst through the sliding glass patio doors, sprinting barefoot across the wet concrete toward the edge of the illuminated pool. The water’s surface was eerily still, save for tiny ripples radiating outward from the small, white-wrapped bundle floating motionless in the deep end. His heart pounded in his ears like a war drum, drowning out the distant wail of sirens echoing somewhere down the winding suburban street. He didn't bother pausing to strip off his shirt or shoes; he dove headfirst into the water with a violent splash.
The chlorine-laced water was freezing, shocking his system, but adrenaline pushed him forward. He kicked his legs hard, cutting through the water like a desperate swimmer racing against death itself. Within seconds, he reached the center of the deep end, his shaking hands grabbing the edge of the white blanket. He pulled it fiercely toward his chest, holding it tight against his body as he broke the surface, gasping for air.
He hauled himself onto the shallow-end steps, coughing and sputtering water, frantically peeling back the damp layers of fabric.
Beneath the wet wool was not his son. It was a heavy, water-logged weighted training dummy, dressed in infant clothes, rigged with a small electronic speaker that was currently playing a looped digital recording of an infant crying.
Julian froze, staring down at the plastic and silicone in his arms as the cruel reality of the setup washed over him. It was a diversion—a calculated, psychological trap designed to break his mind completely.
“Looking for someone, darling?”
Julian whipped his head around, his muscles tensing instantly. Standing near the patio table under the shadow of the overhanging roof was Eleanor. She wasn't in the back of a police cruiser. The heavy steel handcuffs were gone, dangling loosely from her left wrist like a broken bracelet. She looked entirely calm, her emerald green dress catching the flickering neon lights, a sickeningly sweet smile playing across her lips.
“How... how did you get out of the cruiser?” Julian choked out, standing up in the shallow end of the pool, water dripping from his soaked grey shirt. “Where is the real baby, Eleanor? What have you done with my son?”
Eleanor chuckled softly, taking a slow step toward the edge of the pool, looking down at him with an expression of utter, remorseless superiority. “The police officers were very cooperative once I reminded them who funds the municipal police department’s annual charity gala, Julian. Money talks, and desperate husbands always listen to the wrong people. As for your precious son? He’s exactly where he belongs. Far away from both of us.”
Clara suddenly appeared on the patio, bursting through the sliding glass doors with the young mother right behind her. Clara pointed directly at Eleanor, her voice sharp and ringing with absolute fury.
“She’s lying again!” Clara shouted, stepping to the edge of the concrete. “She didn't put him in the pool, and she didn't send him away! Look at her phone in her hand! She’s streaming the live feed to the nursery right now!”

Eleanor’s smile faltered for a microsecond. She looked down at her glowing smartphone screen just as the front gate of the property swung wide open, revealing the flashing red and blue lights of three unmarked federal vehicles pulling rapidly up the driveway.
