Chapter 14 - The Final Transmission

The harsh, static-laden buzz of the pocket baby monitor cut sharply through the chaotic shouting of the reporters and the hum of idling federal engines. Julian froze, his arms instinctively tightening around the infant resting against his chest. He reached into his wet grey shirt pocket with a shaking hand and pulled out the small digital receiver. The LED screen, which should have been completely dark or displaying a simple disconnected signal, was currently illuminated by a blinding, solid white light.
A voice began to crackle through the tiny speaker—distorted, warped, and layered with an eerie digital echo that made the hair on the back of Julian’s neck stand straight up. It wasn't Eleanor’s voice, and it wasn't the young mother’s. It sounded like an automated synthesis of multiple voices overlapping into a single, terrifying decree.
“The chain is broken, but the cycle remains intact,” the monitor hissed, the audio looping with mechanical precision. “You hold the child of another, funded by the blood of the estate, witnessed by the lens that never sleeps. The debt is transferred. The cameras are watching.”
Julian stared down at the glowing screen in utter horror. He spun around, searching the eaves of the house, the surrounding trees, and the front gates. Every single security camera mounted around the perimeter—devices that Eleanor had supposedly disabled or hacked hours earlier—were now blinking with a synchronous, frantic red light, their lenses pivoting automatically to track his every movement like a pack of mechanical wolves.
The lead federal agent stepped up beside Julian, his expression hardening as he heard the transmission coming from the device. He placed a heavy, reassuring hand on Julian’s shoulder, though his eyes scanned the dark tree line with tactical alertness.
“Mr. Vance, hand the baby to me,” the agent ordered, his tone shifting from sympathetic to strictly professional. “We’re securing the entire perimeter. That signal isn’t coming from inside the house. It’s an external broadcast routed through a localized satellite relay.”
Julian didn't move. He held his son tighter, stepping backward away from the agent. “No,” Julian whispered fiercely, his voice finally finding its strength. “I’m not letting him out of my sight again. I’ve lost everything else, but I’m keeping my son.”
Clara stepped out from the shadow of the portico, her face pale, pointing directly up toward the highest peak of the roof where the primary master surveillance dish was mounted against the night sky. The dish was spinning wildly on its axis, aiming a concentrated beam of blue laser light straight down into the center of the driveway, illuminating a fresh envelope taped securely to the hood of the federal vehicle.
