Chapter 4 - The Midnight Visitor

The violent thud against the front door reverberated through the quiet hallways of the house, making the baby in the bassinet stir and let out a faint, distressed whimper. Julian froze, his hand still resting on the back of the leather chair, his eyes locked on Eleanor. The polished, serene mask she had worn just a second prior shattered instantly, replaced by a look of sheer, unadulterated panic that she could not quite conceal. It wasn't the startled reaction of an innocent homeowner; it was the look of someone whose carefully laid traps were finally beginning to unravel at the seams.
“Ignore it,” Eleanor whispered harshly, her voice losing its melodic cadence entirely. She grabbed Julian’s arm with a grip that was surprisingly painful, her long artificial nails digging into his skin. “It’s probably just a stray animal or some neighborhood kids playing a cruel prank at this hour. Don’t go out there.”
Another heavy crash shook the heavy wood of the front door, accompanied by a deep, gruff voice shouting from the porch.
“Open up! City Police! We have a warrant to enter the premises!”
Julian pulled his arm free from Eleanor’s grasp with a sharp jerk. His mind raced, connecting the terrifying dots. Clara out by the pool, the suspiciously wiped security footage, Eleanor’s desperate lies, and now the police arriving in the dead of night with a search warrant. This was no random occurrence. Someone had called them, and it certainly wasn't Eleanor.
Without another word to his wife, Julian strode briskly out of the study and down the grand foyer toward the front entrance. He threw the deadbolt back and pulled the heavy door wide open. Standing on the porch under the glaring yellow light of the security lamps were two uniformed police officers, flanked by a familiar, drenched figure standing slightly behind them. It was Clara. Her blue uniform was still damp, but her posture was rigid, transformed from a helpless victim into a determined accuser.
“Mr. Vance?” the lead officer asked, flashing a badge quickly before stepping into the foyer without waiting for an invitation. “We received an anonymous digital distress transmission containing real-time audio and geolocated logs from this address. We need to conduct a welfare check on the infant immediately.”
Julian stepped back, raising his hands in a gesture of total cooperation, though his eyes darted to Clara over the officer’s shoulder. “There’s been a massive misunderstanding,” Julian began, his voice strained. “My son is safe inside the study. My wife and I—”
“Your wife is currently harboring stolen property and falsified medical records,” Clara interrupted sharply, stepping past the threshold into the house. Her voice lacked the desperate crying from earlier; it was cold, precise, and terrifyingly calm. She reached into her damp pocket and pulled out a heavy silver flash drive, holding it up under the foyer light. “And she didn't manage to scrub the cloud backup before the system severed the local connection.”

Eleanor appeared at the end of the hallway, her face drained of all color, staring at the small piece of metal in Clara’s hand like it was a loaded gun pointed directly at her chest.
