Chapter 3 - The Corrupted Drive

The glowing screen of the study monitor cast an eerie, pale blue light across Julian’s tense face as he sat down in the leather executive chair. The baby had finally drifted off to sleep, tucked safely into his portable bassinet resting on the mahogany desk. Julian’s fingers hovered over the mouse, his heart hammering against his ribs in a way it hadn’t in years. He clicked open the security software, input the administrator password with a slight tremor in his hand, and navigated directly to the folder labeled ‘Backyard Pool & Patio – 03:00 AM’. The timestamp was accurate down to the exact second. He drew a deep breath, steeling himself for whatever truth the digital lens had captured while he was upstairs sleeping soundly.

He double-clicked the primary video file, expecting the playback window to pop up instantly. Instead, a small error box materialized dead center on the screen. The text glared back at him in bold red letters: Error 404: File Corrupted or Missing. Data Stream Interrupted.

Julian frowned, leaning closer to the monitor. He clicked back through the system logs, his confusion rapidly turning into a cold, prickling suspicion. Every single file from the past six hours—the exact window during which Clara claimed Eleanor had staged the entire incident—was completely wiped clean. It wasn't just a regular glitch; someone had executed a hard system override protocol using an external admin key, scrubbing the storage drives clean of every single frame of video evidence.

A soft, measured click sounded behind him. Julian turned his head slowly to find Eleanor standing by the doorway, holding a warm cup of chamomile tea. Her expression was the picture of serene, sympathetic disappointment, though her eyes remained calculating and sharp.

“I told you so, darling,” Eleanor said softly, walking over to place a comforting hand on his tense shoulder. Her fingers felt surprisingly cold against his skin. “The system has been acting up all week. The tech guy warned us about the outdated servers. It’s a tragedy, really, because if the camera had actually worked, you’d see how completely unstable she is.”

Julian stared at her face, searching for any flicker of guilt, but found only a polished, convincing veneer of wifely concern. Yet, something in the back of his mind refused to settle. The timing was simply too convenient. The exact hours of the incident, wiped clean within minutes of the confrontation? That didn't happen by accident.

“It wasn't a glitch, Eleanor,” Julian said, his voice dropping an octave, losing all its previous warmth. He stood up slowly from the chair, towering over her. “Someone accessed the master override panel in the pantry. Someone with my security clearance, or yours.”

Eleanor’s hand slipped off his shoulder, her smile tightening into a thin, brittle line. “Are you implying that I deleted it? Why would I do that if I’m the victim here? You’re letting a hysterical maid make you paranoid, Julian.”

Before Julian could answer, a sharp, frantic scratching sound echoed from the front of the house, followed by the dull thud of heavy boots kicking against the solid oak front door.
