Chapter 9 - The Ultimatum in the Study

The air in the grand foyer grew freezing as Viktor’s finger tightened slightly around the trigger of the suppressed firearm. Arthur Vance did not blink, his weathered face remaining a mask of stoic defiance.
“You’re making a fatal tactical error, Viktor,” Elena said, her voice completely devoid of panic, though her pulse raced. “If my grandfather dies tonight, the entire Vance Global conglomerate goes into immediate federal receivership. The ledgers detailing your syndicate’s money-laundering operations through our shell companies are automatically transmitted to the Department of Justice via dead-man switch.”
Viktor paused, his eyes narrowing as he studied Elena’s face for any sign of a bluff. “You’re willing to sacrifice your own family’s corporate empire just to stop a debt?”
“It’s not our debt,” Elena replied, stepping one pace closer despite the weapon pointed at Arthur. “Julian created it. Julian accumulated it. And Julian can sit in a federal penitentiary while your syndicate’s assets are seized by the federal government piece by piece.”
One of Viktor’s operatives stepped forward, whispering urgently in Russian. “Boss, the perimeter sensors just triggered. Armed vehicles are approaching the gates. It’s Vance security.”
Viktor lowered the pistol by a fraction of an inch, glancing toward the tall leaded-glass windows facing the front drive. The sharp beams of approaching tactical vehicles swept across the lawn, painting the walls in strobing white light.
“You play a very dangerous game, Elena Vance,” Viktor hissed, holstering his weapon with a sharp snap. He turned to his men. “We’re leaving. The girl thinks she holds all the cards, but she hasn't seen the final hand yet.”
Within seconds, Viktor and his operatives melted away through the darkened servants' entrance toward the rear gardens, moving with chilling efficiency.
Thaddeus and a team of heavily armed security specialists burst through the front doors a moment later, weapons raised, scanning the room for threats.
“Secure the perimeter!” Thaddeus ordered, rushing to Elena’s side. “Madam Chairman, are you unharmed?”
“I’m fine, Thaddeus,” Elena said, exhaling a long, steady breath as she walked over to Arthur and helped him stand from the armchair. “Get Grandfather to the secure medical wing. The board meeting is in six hours, and we have a traitor to purge from the executive committee.”

Arthur leaned heavily on his cane, coughing slightly from the chill in the room. “Marcus was right, Elena. The leak isn't just Julian. Someone on the board let them through the estate gates tonight.”
