Chapter 3 - The Cold Exile

The midnight air outside the Grand Meridian Ballroom was sharp, carrying the damp scent of an oncoming autumn rain. Elena stepped into the back of a black armored Maybach, her long black gown pooling gracefully across the plush leather seat. Arthur sat opposite her, closing the partition window to ensure complete privacy from the driver and the security detail outside.
“The assets in Zurich have been secured,” Arthur said, his voice tired but carrying an underlying tone of vindication. “The board members who helped Julian embezzle those funds over the last eighteen months have already been served with federal indictments.”
Elena stared out the tinted window, watching the flashing blue lights of local police cruisers pull up to the venue entrance. “He thought he was invincible, Grandfather. Greed makes fools of even the smartest men.”
“He was blinded by his own ambition,” Arthur replied, leaning back against the headrest. “Just like his father before him. But you handled the public exposure with the exact composure I trained you for.”
Elena turned her gaze from the window to meet the old man's eyes. “This was never just about a corporate coup, Arthur. Julian crossed a line that cannot be unwritten. He thought he could humiliate me publicly and discard me like a broken tool. He forgot who funded his initial venture in the first place.”
“The legal team has already filed for a total annulment based on fraud and financial malfeasance,” Arthur added, handing her a sleek black tablet. “His personal credit cards have been declined globally within the last three minutes. Clara has already left him, by the way. She was seen getting into a cab toward the airport.”
Elena took the tablet, scrolling through the rapidly updating financial ledgers. Vance Global was shedding its toxic elements faster than a snake shedding dead skin. Yet, a cold ache lingered in her chest—not from grief, but from the realization of how deep human betrayal could run.
“What about the foundation accounts?” Elena asked, tapping the screen. “The charity funds Julian redirected to his offshore shell companies?”
Arthur smiled grimly. “Fully recovered. They are being routed back to the community development projects as we speak. But there is one detail regarding Julian’s private office that our team hasn't been able to access yet. A biometric safe behind his portrait.”

Elena looked down at the small gold ring on her finger, twisting it slowly. “A safe that requires both a retinal scan and the physical master key.” She held up her hand, the light catching the hidden mechanism inside the gold band. “Which he threw on the floor tonight, believing it was worthless brass.”
