Chapter 4 - The Ancestral Vault

Dawn broke over the Manhattan skyline, painting the glass towers of the financial district in hues of cold grey and bruised purple. Inside the penthouse office of Vance Global, the atmosphere was suffocatingly quiet. The massive mahogany desk, once Julian’s pride, was completely bare save for a single black leather briefcase.

Elena stood before the large oil painting of Arthur Vance Sr., her fingers lightly tracing the heavy gold frame. She pressed the hidden release latch, and the heavy portrait swung outward with a soft pneumatic hiss, revealing a biometric steel vault built directly into the reinforced concrete wall.

“The security overrides are active, Madam Chairman,” Thaddeus announced, standing a respectful distance away with a portable diagnostic terminal in his hands.

Elena stepped closer. The vault’s digital interface blinked red, demanding verification. She placed her eye against the optical scanner, and a soft chime echoed through the silent office as the system recognized her credentials.

“Primary authorization accepted,” the robotic voice of the vault announced. “Insert physical override key.”

Elena slid the small gold ring from her finger and inserted it into a narrow slot beneath the optical lens. A series of internal gears clicked into place, and the heavy steel door swung open, releasing thirty years of pent-up dust and cold air.

Inside sat a series of leather-bound ledgers, a collection of unmarked flash drives, and a thick stack of personal correspondence marked with red confidentiality stamps. Elena reached for the topmost ledger, her gloved fingers turning the heavy parchment pages.

“Good morning, cousin,” a voice murmured from the shadows near the private elevators.

Elena did not jump. She slowly turned her head to see Marcus Vance, Julian’s estranged older brother, leaning against the doorframe with a bitter, exhausted smile on his face. He wore a rumpled grey suit, looking as though he hadn't slept in days.

“Marcus,” Elena said evenly, closing the ledger with a quiet thump. “You shouldn't be here. The building is locked to all family members pending the federal audit.”

“I’m not here to save Julian,” Marcus said, stepping into the pale morning light. “I’m here to make sure you find what our uncle hid before the feds tear this office apart. Because if you think Julian acted alone, you are gravely mistaken.”
