Chapter 1 - The Shattered Glass

The crystal chandeliers of the Grand Meridian Ballroom cast a cold, blinding light over the sea of high-society faces. Elena Vance stood in the center of the polished white marble floor, her sleek black evening gown marred by a dark, ugly stain of spilled vintage Bordeaux across her chest. Her diamond earrings caught the light as she kept her breathing slow and controlled. Across from her, Julian Vance, her husband of three years, stood rigid in his tailored black tuxedo, his face flushed with uncontainable rage. The small gold ring lay on the marble between them, rolling slightly to a stop.

“Security! Get her out!” Julian shouted, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings and cutting through the muffled gasps of the elite crowd.

Elena did not flinch. She bent down with deliberate slowness, her fingers brushing the cool stone to retrieve the gold band. She stood up tall, facing Julian and Clara, the elegant blonde woman in the red strapless gown who clung possessively to Julian’s arm while holding a champagne flute.

“You really think I’m nobody?” Elena asked, her voice dropping to a dangerous, icy register that sent a shiver through the room.

Julian offered a dismissive, cruel smile, tightening his grip on Clara’s waist. “You have nothing without me, Elena. You were a charity case I pulled off the streets.”

Elena did not raise her voice. Instead, she lifted her smartphone to her ear, maintaining direct, unblinking eye contact with Julian.

“Thaddeus?” she said clearly into the receiver.

“Yes, Madam Chairman,” a crisp, formal voice replied over the speaker.

“Fire the CEO of Vance Global, freeze all of Julian’s personal and corporate accounts, and revoke his corporate access immediately.”

Julian’s dismissive smile faltered, replaced by a sudden, frantic panic as the heavy mahogany doors at the far end of the ballroom slowly creaked open.
