Chapter 13 - The Final Confrontation

The high beams of the unmarked vehicle cut through the sheet of rain, casting long, menacing shadows across the slick asphalt of the bridge. The passenger door swung open, and Viktor stepped out into the storm, wearing a heavy black wool coat, holding an umbrella in one hand and a suppressed pistol loosely in the other.
Thaddeus immediately stepped in front of Elena, raising his weapon, but Viktor raised his free hand in a placating gesture, signaling his men to hold their positions.
“Put the gun down, Thaddeus,” Viktor called out over the howling wind. “If I wanted Mrs. Vance dead, her car would have been in the river ten minutes ago.”
Elena stepped out from behind Thaddeus, her composure absolute despite the freezing rain soaking through her hair. “You went through a lot of trouble to orchestrate a blockade just to have a conversation, Viktor.”
“Richard’s contract hit was amateur work,” Viktor said, taking a slow step forward on the wet concrete. “His men would have botched it within twenty-four hours anyway. But more importantly, Richard is gone, and Julian is rotting in a holding cell. That leaves you holding the entire Vance empire—and the Pacific Northwest land deeds.”
“Which you will never acquire,” Elena replied, her voice steady and razor-sharp. “Those deeds are now held in an immutable federal environmental trust managed by the Department of Justice.”
Viktor smiled, a cold, humorless expression. “Governments change, Mrs. Vance. Administrations shift. But syndicates endure. However… I’m a businessman, not a butcher. I came to make a final proposal.”
“I don’t negotiate with criminals,” Elena stated flatly.
“It’s not a negotiation; it’s an exit strategy,” Viktor corrected. “Hand over the private keys to the dormant offshore accounts Richard and Julian used to hide their initial capital. In exchange, my consortium wipes the remaining corporate debt clean and guarantees that no one from our organization will ever bother the Vance family name again.”
Marcus, who had emerged from the damaged escort vehicle with a bruised shoulder, limped over to stand beside Elena. “Don’t listen to him, Elena. It’s a trap. Once he gets the keys, he’ll liquidate everything and disappear.”
Viktor turned his gaze toward Marcus, his eyes cold as winter ice. “You’re in no position to bargain, Mr. Vance. Your family’s legacy is hanging by a single thread.”
Elena looked at Viktor, then down at the small gold ring on her finger, the metal gleaming faintly beneath the amber streetlamps. She slowly raised her hand, pointing directly at Viktor’s chest.

“You think my family’s legacy depends on money, Viktor,” Elena said, her voice carrying an unshakable power that silenced the storm around them. “You’re wrong. It depends on justice.”
