Chapter 12 - The Shadow on the Bridge

The rain fell in a steady, blinding sheet over the Brooklyn Bridge, blurring the glowing amber lights of the Manhattan skyline into a watercolor wash of grey and gold. Elena’s armored Maybach crawled slowly through the gridlocked evening traffic, its wipers swishing rhythmically against the windshield.
In the back seat, Elena reviewed the intercepted contract hit details on her tablet while Thaddeus monitored the external security feeds from the escort vehicle trailing ten yards behind.
“The bridge approach is completely congested,” Thaddeus’s voice crackled over the secure intercom. “Local authorities report an overturned semi blocking the center span. We’re advised to divert through the tunnel.”
“Negative,” Elena said without looking up from her screen. “The tunnel exit has no alternate routes. It’s a tactical bottleneck. Tell the driver to hold position in the middle lane and keep the escort close.”
Suddenly, the encrypted earpiece emitted a sharp, high-pitched warning tone.
“Warning: Multiple unauthorized vehicles closing from the rear at high speed,” Thaddeus shouted over the intercom. “They’re bypassing the traffic jam on the maintenance shoulder!”
Before the driver could shift gears, a heavy black SUV slammed violently into the rear bumper of the escort vehicle, sending it spinning across the wet concrete into the bridge’s steel suspension cables with a deafening screech of metal.
Elena’s car jolted forward as another vehicle rammed their side, shattering the reinforced rear window into a web of white cracks. Through the splintered glass, a masked figure emerged from the attacking SUV, raising a heavy-caliber firearm directly toward the back seat.
Thaddeus kicked open the front passenger door of Elena’s car, drawing his weapon and firing two rapid shots through the rain, striking the attacker before he could pull the trigger.
“We have to move, Madam Chairman!” Thaddeus yelled, pulling open Elena’s door amid the roaring wind and rain. “The bridge is completely cut off!”

Elena stepped out onto the wet pavement, her black trench coat whipping around her ankles. As she looked down the length of the bridge, a second unmarked vehicle pulled up twenty feet away, blocking their only path of escape, its high-beam headlights blindingly bright in the stormy night.
