Chapter 6 - Handcuffs and Heritage

The heavy silence that followed the officer's declaration felt deafening. The flashing red and blue lights painted the elegant gold moldings of the ballroom in a stark, eerie hue. Arthur Sterling stood frozen, his eyes darting between the approaching officers and his son. For a man who had commanded boardrooms and dictated the fortunes of thousands for decades, the sight of the steel handcuffs seemed entirely surreal.
"This is a mistake," Arthur said, his voice dropping to a harsh, gravelly whisper as the officers closed the distance between them. "Call the governor. Call our legal team. This is an outrage!"
"You have the right to remain silent," the lead officer recited mechanically, grabbing Arthur by the arm and spinning him around to secure the cuffs behind his back. The metallic click echoed sharply across the quiet room.
Julian stood motionless, holding the sleeping toddler against his chest. He watched his father—the man who had shaped his entire worldview, who had taught him how to run an empire with an iron fist—being led away in disgrace. There was a hollow ache in Julian’s chest. He felt betrayed, angry, and utterly untethered. As Arthur passed him, the older man paused, looking his son dead in the eye.
"You're destroying everything I built for you," Arthur muttered bitterly, before being guided out the double doors.
Victoria Vance snapped her briefcase shut, the sound sharp in the quiet room. She looked at Julian with a professional, detached expression.
"I will handle the press release," Victoria said quietly. "We will frame this as an internal compliance issue discovered by corporate oversight to stabilize the stock price. But Julian... you need to figure out what you are going to do about the mother."
Victoria didn't wait for a response. She turned and walked away, following the path of the police escort out of the ballroom.
Julian was left standing alone in the center of the vast, ruined room, save for Emma. The broken glass crunched softly beneath his shoes as he shifted his weight. Leo stirred in his sleep, letting out a soft sigh and burying his face deeper into the crook of Julian’s neck. Julian looked up at Emma, who stood a few feet away, her hands clasped tightly together, her black uniform dress still stained with spilled wine.
"You don't have to be afraid of him anymore," Julian said, his voice husky with emotion.
Emma let out a dry, humorless laugh, shaking her head.
"I spent twenty years looking over my shoulder, Julian," she said softly. "Fear becomes a habit. I don't even know how to live without it."
Julian took a tentative step toward her, closing the distance between them.
"Come home with us," Julian said, the words slipping out before he could second-guess them.
Emma froze, her eyes widening in sheer disbelief.

"What did you just say?" she whispered.
