Chapter 1 - The Broken Glass

The echoes of shattering glass still vibrated through the opulent ballroom of the Grand Plaza Hotel. Shards of crystal lay scattered across the polished marble floor like jagged diamonds, catching the harsh glare of the crystal chandeliers overhead. Leo, the toddler in the miniature dark suit and bright red tie, blinked his wide brown eyes, clutching his small red toy car tightly in his tiny fist. He was completely unharmed, shielded by the black uniform skirt and trembling body of a young waitress named Emma. She knelt amidst the hazardous debris, her breathing shallow and ragged as she stroked the soft curls of the boy’s head.
Julian rushed across the ruined floor, his expensive dark dress shirt slightly rumpled from panic. He dropped to his knees, his face pale and contorted with a mixture of terror and overwhelming relief. Without a second thought, Julian scooped his son into his strong arms, pulling Leo against his chest as if the world might tear them apart again. He looked down at Emma with intense, piercing eyes, his breath hitching in his throat.
"She saved him, Dad," Julian said, his voice shaking as his own father, Arthur, stepped into the circle of light surrounding them.
Arthur adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses, his gaze shifting from the terrified young woman on the floor to the bewildered toddler in his son's arms. A frown etched deep lines into the older man's forehead.
Arthur narrowed his eyes at the waitress, stepping closer to inspect her trembling form.
"How do you know his name?" Arthur demanded, his voice cutting through the murmurs of the stunned gala guests.
Emma looked up, tears spilling over her eyelashes, her lower lip trembling violently against the cold night air.
"Because I named him," Emma whispered.
Julian froze, his arms tightening protectively around the boy.
"Emma?" Julian breathed, the name slipping from his lips like a ghost from the past.
Arthur stepped backward as if struck, staring at the waitress in absolute horror.
May you like
"That's impossible," Arthur growled.
