Chapter 2 - Shadows of the Past

The heavy silence in the grand ballroom felt suffocating. Hotel security guards finally pushed through the perimeter of stunned onlookers, but Julian raised a single hand, signaling them to hold back. He stared down at Emma, who remained kneeling on the cold floor, surrounded by the remnants of the champagne tower. Her black uniform jacket was stained with spilled vintage wine, resembling dark blood against the fabric. Her name tag, reading 'Emma - Banquet Staff,' caught the harsh light, mocking the history they shared.
"You died," Arthur hissed, stepping protectively in front of his son and grandson. "We buried you, or at least, the life you left behind."
Emma stood up slowly, her knees shaking beneath her. She refused to cower, meeting Arthur’s harsh glare with a quiet, devastating resilience.
"You didn't bury me, Arthur," Emma said, her voice steady despite her trembling hands. "You erased me. You paid for my silence, packed me into a car, and pretended I never existed."
Julian’s heart hammered against his ribs. He looked at Leo, then back at Emma, the memories of a summer twenty years ago crashing into his mind. He had been a reckless boy, and Emma had been the scholarship student working at his family’s estate. His father had orchestrated her disappearance with cold, calculated efficiency, threatening ruin if she ever returned.
"Why are you here, Emma?" Julian asked, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "Why work in my hotel?"
"I didn't choose this hotel, Julian," Emma replied, her eyes flashing with sudden, restrained fury. "Your company bought the catering firm I’ve worked at for five years. But when I saw you walk in tonight with that boy, wearing the exact same red tie I bought him for his first birthday... I couldn't just stand by."
Arthur stepped forward, his face flushing a deep crimson.
"Get security," Arthur barked over his shoulder. "Have this woman removed from the premises immediately."

"Don't touch me," Emma warned, her voice suddenly cutting through the room like a blade. She reached into her pocket and pulled out a worn, folded piece of paper, holding it up for Julian to see. "Before you throw me out, Julian, ask your father why Leo's birth certificate lists a mother who never gave birth."
