Chapter 5 - The Legal Trap

Victoria Vance paused, adjusting her glasses as she looked directly at Julian. The tension in the ballroom was so thick it felt tangible; guests had stopped pretending not to watch, their whispers forming a low, collective buzz around the periphery of the shattered champagne tower.
"Go on, Victoria," Julian urged, his voice tight with a mixture of dread and anticipation. "What did the database check show?"
"Emma’s DNA is registered in the state medical archives from her maternity intake twenty-eight years ago," Victoria stated calmly. "More importantly, her genetic profile matches 99.99 percent of Leo's maternal markers. The birth certificate your father filed, Arthur, is an engineered fabrication using a deceased surrogate's identity to mask her true lineage."
Arthur’s face drained of all color. For the first time, the patriarch of the Sterling empire looked genuinely old. He took a half-step back, his hand gripping the lapel of his tuxedo jacket for balance.
"You went behind my back, Victoria?" Arthur hissed, his voice trembling with fury. "I pay your retainer!"
"My loyalty is to the Sterling corporation and its legal integrity, Arthur," Victoria replied without flinching. "Committing fraud to orchestrate a child abduction and forging vital statistics crosses a line that even our firm cannot insulate you from. If this goes public, the stock value of Sterling Hotels will drop by at least forty percent by morning."
Julian clutched Leo tighter. The boy had fallen asleep against his shoulder, oblivious to the war being fought over him. Julian looked at the woman who had given birth to his son, feeling a profound wave of guilt wash over him. He had spent three years believing a lie, never questioning the narrative his father had fed him.
"Emma," Julian said softly, stepping closer to her. "I am so sorry. I didn't know."
Emma looked up at him, her eyes shining with unshed tears.
"I know you didn't, Julian," she whispered. "If you had known, you would have torn the city apart to find me. That's the boy I fell in love with all those years ago."
Arthur slammed his fist onto a nearby cocktail table, rattling the few unbroken glasses left on the tray.
"This is madness!" Arthur shouted, losing his legendary composure. "She wants money! That's all this is about! Name your price, Emma. A million? Five million? Just take it and disappear again!"
Emma turned slowly to face Arthur, her expression hardening into absolute ice.
"You still think everything can be bought, don't you?" Emma asked quietly. "You can't buy back the three years I missed of my son's life, Arthur. You can't buy back the nights I spent crying myself to sleep."
Before Arthur could retort, the heavy oak doors at the entrance of the ballroom burst open, and flashing red and blue lights illuminated the polished marble floor. Two police officers stepped inside, followed by a federal marshal.

"Arthur Sterling?" the lead officer called out, holding up a warrant envelope. "You're under arrest for interstate child abduction and document falsification."
