Chapter 13 - The Offshore Trap

The color drained entirely from Richard Sterling’s face. The smug, victorious grin froze on his lips, and his hand hovered halfway back to his seat. The entire boardroom turned in unison, staring at the security chief who stood panting near the threshold.
"What did you just say?" Richard demanded, his voice cracking slightly despite his best efforts to maintain composure.
Julian slowly stood up from his chair, adjusting his cuffs with deliberate slowness. He looked across the table at his uncle, watching the sudden panic ripple through the older man's carefully constructed facade.
"Put it on speaker," Julian instructed the security chief, his voice ringing with absolute authority.
The chief tapped the screen, and a crisp, authoritative voice filled the grand boardroom, amplified by the conference speakers.
"This is Special Agent Miller, Federal Bureau of Investigation," the voice announced clearly. "We have executed a search warrant on Arthur Sterling’s primary offshore trust based in the Cayman Islands. While tracing the illicit funds used for the 2004 child abduction hush-money accounts, our financial forensics unit uncovered a secondary beneficiary who has been actively laundering corporate assets through London subsidiaries for over a decade."
Richard took an involuntary step backward, his hand gripping the edge of the mahogany table for support.
"That's a fabrication," Richard stammered, his voice rising in panic. "A clerical error!"
"The routing numbers match your personal holding accounts in Zurich, Mr. Sterling," Agent Miller continued smoothly over the speaker. "Federal marshals are currently securing your assets in London and en route to this location with an arrest warrant for corporate espionage, embezzlement, and conspiracy."
The boardroom erupted into chaos. Board members shouted over one another, slamming their briefcases shut and scrambling away from Richard as if he carried a contagious disease. Marcus Sterling dropped his pen, staring at Richard in absolute betrayal.
Victoria Vance calmly opened her briefcase, pulled out a thick legal precedent folder, and slid it across the table toward Marcus.
"According to corporate bylaws section twelve, paragraph four," Victoria stated with chilling professionalism, "any board member or shareholder indicted on federal felony charges is immediately stripped of all voting rights and executive privileges."
Richard glared at Victoria, his eyes wide with fury. "You set me up! You and Arthur both!"
"No one set you up, Richard," Julian said quietly, walking slowly around the table until he stood face-to-face with his uncle. "You just couldn't resist stepping into a trap that your own greed laid out for you."
Before Richard could liven a response, heavy footsteps echoed down the hallway outside the boardroom doors. The polished wood doors burst open a second time, framing two federal agents in dark tactical jackets holding federal warrants.
"Richard Sterling?" the lead agent called out, stepping into the room.
Richard looked around the table, realizing every escape route had been systematically blocked. He offered no resistance as the federal agents stepped forward, securing the steel handcuffs around his wrists with a sharp, familiar click. As they led him past Julian and Emma, Richard glared at the young waitress with venomous hatred.

"You think you won?" Richard hissed bitterly as he was guided out. "The Sterling name is finished anyway."
