Chapter 4 - The Stolen Son

The chandeliers overhead seemed to dim as the devastating reality settled over Julian. He looked at the little boy in the dark suit, tracing the familiar slope of the nose and the distinct shape of the chin that he had always assumed came from his own side of the family. He had been told that Leo’s biological mother had tragically passed away due to severe post-partum complications—a convenient narrative spun by his father’s legal team to explain the sudden appearance of an infant heir.

"You lied to me," Julian whispered, turning his gaze slowly toward Arthur. The betrayal tasted like ash in his mouth. "For three years, you let me mourn a ghost while you raised my child under your thumb, keeping his true mother locked out of our lives."

Arthur’s face hardened into a mask of cold pragmatism. He stepped closer to his son, lowering his voice so only the immediate family could hear.

"I did what was necessary for this family, Julian," Arthur said, refusing to show remorse. "You were twenty-two, reckless, and tied to a girl with no future. The Sterling empire required stability, not a scandal. I secured your son’s future, and I protected our legacy. You should be thanking me."

"Thank you?" Julian let out a dark, humorless laugh that held no amusement. "You stole my life! You stole her child!"

Emma stepped forward, her eyes locked on Arthur with a fierce, burning intensity.

"You thought you broke me, Arthur," Emma said, her voice low and steady. "You thought by taking my baby and giving me a small envelope of cash, you could erase my existence. But a mother's bond isn't something you can file away in a corporate cabinet."

Arthur sneered, his mask of control slipping further.

"And what do you expect to achieve now, Emma? You're a banquet waitress. We are the Sterlings. You have no money, no lawyers, and no proof other than a forged piece of paper."

"Try a DNA test," a calm, chilling voice interrupted from the edge of the crowd.

Julian, Arthur, and Emma all whipped their heads around. Standing near the shattered glass was a sharp-featured woman in a tailored gray suit, holding a leather briefcase. It was Victoria Vance, the Sterling family’s chief corporate counsel, who had just arrived at the gala.

"Victoria," Arthur sighed in relief. "Tell these fools how ridiculous this is."

Victoria didn't smile. She walked past Arthur, stopping directly in front of Emma, and opened her briefcase.

"I received an anonymous tip with genetic markers matching Master Leo’s pediatric records two hours ago," Victoria said coldly. "I ran the preliminary database check. Emma isn't just a former employee."
