Chapter 7 - Shattered Glass

The shockwave of the blast threw Maya off balance, sending her crashing hard against the mahogany conference table. Shards of laminated safety glass rained down like diamond dust, scattering across the polished concrete floor in a blinding cascade of reflections. Through the gaping hole where the floor-to-ceiling window had just been, the howling wind of the upper atmosphere rushed into the penthouse, carrying the distant wail of police sirens far below in the city streets.
"Down!" Julian shouted, his voice cutting through the ringing in Maya's ears with absolute authority.
Before she could process the command, Julian’s hand wrapped firmly around her wrist, hauling her violently behind the heavy oak base of the conference table. Dust and smoke billowed through the room, stinging their eyes and catching in their throats. Across the floor, the tactical operatives had already taken up defensive positions, their rifles raised toward the blown-out window as dark figures began rappelling down the exterior facade from a hovering helicopter.
Coughing violently, Maya pressed her back against the thick wood, her hands instinctively clutching her torn dress. "They found us... they actually found us!"
"They tracked the secure encryption key I used to access Vanguard's mainframe," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm as he unbuttoned his suit jacket, revealing a sleek, military-grade tactical holster strapped beneath his left arm. He withdrew a compact, matte-black sidearm, checking the magazine with practiced, fluid mechanics.
Maya stared at the weapon, her chest heaving as adrenaline surged through her veins. "You brought them here! You used my company as bait!"
Julian didn't look away from the breached window. "I used a vulnerability to flush them out into the open. For ten years, they’ve hunted me in the shadows. This is the first time they’ve stepped into my light."
A burst of automatic gunfire shattered the remaining interior glass partitions, sending white plaster dust exploding into the air. One of the tactical operatives near the elevator dropped his rifle with a metallic clatter, slumping backward against the wall with a dark stain spreading rapidly across his chest armor.
Marcus, the lead operative, fired a controlled three-round burst through the smoke toward the window, shouting over the roar of the rotor blades. "Perimeter compromised! Multiple hostiles entering via the north facade! Boss, we need to move now!"
Julian glanced down at Maya, his dark eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that burned through the chaos. He reached out, his warm fingers brushing a smudge of soot from her cheek.
"Listen to me very carefully, Maya," Julian said, his voice dropping to a harsh, steady whisper. "When I tell you to run, you take the private service stairwell down to the basement garage. The hypercar is keyed to your biometric scanner now. Drive straight to the airfield coordinates I've uploaded to the dash. Don't look back."
Maya grabbed the lapel of his navy blue suit, her fingers gripping the fabric with desperate fury. "I'm not leaving you here to die for a ten-year-old grudge!"
May you like
Before Julian could answer, a heavy flashbang grenade landed with a metallic clatter just six feet from where they hid behind the table.
