Chapter 11 - Darkness and Steel

The sudden plunge into total darkness was followed immediately by the deafening roar of a high-powered engine revving from the opposite end of the garage. In the pitch black, a pair of blinding high-beam headlights flashed on, illuminating the dust-filled air and catching Vaughn directly in the glare.
"Get in!" Julian’s voice shouted fiercely through the roar of the engine.
Maya didn't hesitate. She threw herself into the driver's seat of the hypercar, hauling the heavy gull-wing door down just as the first suppressed round ricocheted off the reinforced carbon-fiber roof with a sharp ping. The interior dashboard lit up in a cascade of tactical readouts, the biometric sensors instantly syncing with her pulse.
Through the windshield, Maya saw the chaotic flash of muzzle fire near the pillar where Vaughn had been standing. Julian was already moving, closing the distance in the dark with terrifying speed. She heard the dull thud of a physical struggle—a grunt of pain, the crack of bone against concrete, and then a heavy body hitting the floor.
"Julian!" Maya screamed over the engine's roar, her hands gripping the steering wheel as she hit the ignition toggle.
The twin-turbo V8 responded instantly, throwing her back against the leather seat with crushing G-force. The hypercar surged forward, tires squealing against the oil-stained concrete as Julian materialized out of the smoke, diving through the passenger-side window just as the gull-wing door slammed shut behind him.
The car rocketed toward the subterranean exit ramp, tires smoking as they slammed through the security gate with a loud crunch of splintered wood and twisted metal. They burst out from the basement into the pouring rain of the downtown street, the cold night air rushing over the chassis.
Maya’s hands shook violently on the steering wheel as she navigated the slick asphalt, weaving through evening traffic with reckless abandon. She glanced sideways at Julian. He was slumped slightly against the passenger door, his breathing heavy, holding his left shoulder where a dark, spreading stain was rapidly soaking through the navy blue fabric of his suit jacket.
"You're bleeding," Maya said, her voice cracking with panic as she glanced at the wound.
Julian pressed his right hand firmly against the torn fabric, wincing slightly as he shook his head. "It's just a graze. Keep driving. We aren't safe yet. They have backup units stationed at every major intersection within a three-mile radius."
Maya gripped the steering wheel tighter, her eyes scanning the dark streets ahead. "Where are we going? If Vanguard is compromised and the police are tied up with the Syndicate, there's nowhere left to hide in this city!"
Julian turned his head toward the passenger window, wiping a smear of soot and rain from his forehead. He reached into his jacket pocket with his uninjured hand, pulling out a small, heavy silver flash drive that glinted under the dashboard lights.

"We aren't hiding," Julian said, his voice dropping into a cold, resolute register. "We're going to upload the entire Syndicate ledger to every open-source intelligence network on the planet. And we're going to do it from their own primary data server."
