Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Ambush

The private elevator ascended in utter silence, the digital floor numbers glowing in aggressive red against the brushed steel wall. Maya stood rigidly, her mind refusing to process the words Julian had dropped in the car. Vanguard Capital was a titan, a multi-billion-dollar private equity firm where she had clawed her way to the top through sheer ruthlessness and sleepless nights. The idea of a hostile takeover by an unknown entity had been the boogeyman of their weekly executive meetings for months. And now, the ghost from her past was holding the smoking gun.

"You're lying," Maya said, her voice echoing slightly in the confined space. "Vanguard's ownership is distributed among institutional shareholders. A hostile takeover requires billions in liquid capital and months of strategic positioning."

Julian didn't look at her; he was staring at his reflection in the mirrored doors, adjusting the knot of his dark tie with mechanical precision.

"Who told you I started yesterday?" Julian asked calmly. "I've been positioning pieces on this board since before you made partner, Maya."

The elevator chimed softly and the doors slid open to reveal the executive penthouse floor. It was dark, save for the emergency perimeter lighting and the glow of the city through the massive floor-to-ceiling windows. The cleaning crew had already gone home, leaving an eerie, sterile quiet. Yet, as they stepped out onto the polished concrete, Maya heard the low murmur of voices coming from the executive conference room at the end of the hall.

Maya froze, her hand gripping the strap of her leather clutch. "Who is in there?"

Julian began walking forward with unhurried, deliberate steps, his leather-soled shoes clicking sharply against the floor. "Your CEO, your chief financial officer, and the three primary stakeholders who voted to push you out of the Henderson account last Tuesday."

Maya’s breath caught in her throat. The Henderson account was her masterpiece, a massive green-energy portfolio she had secured single-handedly. When the board had reassigned half the management fees to the CEO’s nephew, she had threatened to resign. They had laughed her out of the room, assuming she had nowhere else to go.

She followed Julian down the corridor, her high heels clicking a frantic rhythm behind him. As they reached the frosted glass doors of the conference room, Julian didn't knock. He simply reached out and pushed the door open, the hinges swinging inward with a soft, expensive sigh.

Inside, the men looked up from their scattered documents, irritation flashing across their faces at the intrusion. But when their eyes shifted from Julian to the woman standing directly behind him, the irritation vanished, replaced instantly by absolute, unadulterated terror.

Sitting at the head of the mahogany table was Arthur Vance, the aging patriarch of Vanguard Capital, whose hands began to tremble as he stared at the young man in the navy blue suit.

"Good evening, gentlemen," Julian said, his voice cutting through the silent room like a razor blade. "I believe we have a contract to finalize."
