Chapter 1 - The Ten-Year Echo

The crisp autumn air outside the Grand Regent Hotel carried the faint scent of rain and exhaust fumes. Maya stood frozen near the revolving glass doors, her breath pluming softly in the harsh amber light of the portico. She stared at Julian, taking in the tailored navy blue suit and the dark shirt that hugged his frame. The man standing before her was both the ghost of her past and an absolute stranger. She clutched her red long-sleeve dress tightly around her shoulders, her fingers digging into the fabric as a familiar wave of resentment washed over her. Ten years of silence, ten years of struggling alone while he vanished without a trace, all condensed into this impossible moment.

"Wait, is that you?" Maya asked softly, her voice trembling slightly with a mix of disbelief and accumulated bitterness.

Julian turned slowly, his posture relaxed, his dark eyes meeting hers with an unnerving calm. He offered a faint, fleeting smile that didn't quite reach his eyes.

"Yeah," Julian replied, his voice deep and steady, devoid of the defensive edge she remembered from their college days.

Maya stepped closer, her jaw tightening as she looked him up and down. The sharp contrast between her hard-won success and what she assumed was his stagnant life ignited a sudden, biting urge to put him in his place. She couldn't help herself; the old dynamic snapped back into place instantly.

"Ten years and you still dress like you’re broke?" Maya snapped, her tone dripping with sarcastic condescension as she crossed her arms.

Julian didn't flinch, nor did his expression harden. He adjusted his cuff, taking his time before offering a measured reply.

"I’m doing fine," Julian responded calmly, maintaining eye contact with a frustrating level of poise that only annoyed her further.

Before Maya could retort, a young valet in a crisp uniform hurried over, holding out a gleaming luxury car key fob featuring a heavy chrome crest. Julian took the fob with a casual nod of thanks, tossing a heavy tip into the valet's palm. Maya watched the exchange, her eyes dropping to the polished obsidian emblem of a brand known only to billionaires and high-level executives. The air left her lungs in a sharp rush as reality shifted beneath her feet.

"Oh!" Maya whispered, her eyes widening in absolute shock as the roar of a twin-turbo V8 engine echoed from the drive.

Julian turned his back to her, pressing the unlock button, and a stunning midnight-blue hypercar parked in the VIP zone flashed its headlights. Maya stood paralyzed, realizing too late that the man she had just insulted wasn't struggling at all; he was the primary investor she had spent the last six months trying to pitch her firm to.
