Chapter 14 - The Final Countdown

The heavy steel blast shutters dropped with a deafening crash, sealing the subterranean server vault from the outside world just as the sound of approaching boots echoed from the access tunnel. Maya spun around, pressing her back against the cool surface of the master console as the crimson warning lights flashed relentlessly overhead.
"They're outside the door!" Maya shouted, her voice thick with panic as she pointed toward the sealed bulkhead. "Julian, the upload—what's the status?"
Julian kept his eyes locked on the amber progress bar creeping across the main diagnostic monitor. The numbers ticked upward with agonizing slowness: 95%... 97%... 99%...
From the other side of the heavy steel blast door, the sharp, concussive boom of a breaching charge detonated against the reinforced hinges. The entire vault floor trembled under the shockwave, showering fine concrete dust down from the vaulted ceiling. A second later, the edge of the steel door buckled inward, gasping under the immense pressure as cutting torches began to whine against the titanium frame.
"Ten seconds," Julian muttered, his voice dangerously calm as he pulled his sidearm with his right hand, keeping his body positioned between the console and the breached door.
Maya looked around the massive, echoing server room in a desperate search for another exit, but there was none. They were trapped in a concrete tomb deep beneath the freezing harbor. She looked back at Julian, taking in the blood soaking through his navy blue suit, the grim set of his jaw, and the absolute, unwavering resolve in his dark eyes. Ten years of separation, resentment, and ambition had all distilled down to this single, explosive second.
"Julian," Maya whispered, her voice softening as she stepped closer to him, ignoring the imminent threat outside. "If we don't make it out of here... I need you to know I was wrong. About everything."
Julian glanced sideways at her, a rare, tender warmth touching his eyes for a split second before he looked back at the monitor. "You were just trying to survive, Maya. Same as me."
The monitor flashed a brilliant, blinding green.
Upload complete. All nodes successfully decrypted and broadcasted globally.
With a deafening hiss, the central server racks began to vent superheated steam as safety protocols initiated a total thermal self-destruction sequence. The blinking indicator lights died one by one, plunging the vast room into deep, impenetrable shadows.
At that exact moment, the steel blast door blew inward with an explosive roar, and heavily armed tactical operatives poured through the opening, their weapons raised and sweeping the room.
