Chapter 6 - Crosshairs

The sudden metallic click of rifle safeties disengaging echoed like gunfire in the silent penthouse. Maya froze, her breath catching in her throat as her eyes darted from the barrels of the weapons to Julian’s face. To her utter horror, Julian didn't flinch, nor did his hands leave his trouser pockets. He exhaled a slow, measured breath, his dark eyes narrowing slightly as he looked at the lead operative standing in the center of the doorway.
"You're late, Vance," the lead operative said through a distorted comms unit, his voice flat and robotic. "The extraction window was three minutes ago."
Maya’s mind spun out of control. Vance? She looked from the tactical operative back to Julian, her legs trembling beneath her red dress. "What... what did he call you?" she whispered, the horrifying realization dawning on her that she had no idea who Julian really was, or what kind of world he had built in the decade they spent apart.
Julian finally pulled his hands from his pockets, turning slowly to face the armed men with an unsettling calm. "Traffic was heavy, Marcus. And I had a reunion to attend."
Arthur Vance shrank back into his chair, pressing himself against the cushions as if he could melt into the leather. He didn't look surprised by the armed men; he looked resigned, like a man who had known this moment was coming for years.
"You don't understand," Arthur muttered, his voice shaking as he looked up at Maya. "He's not just a private equity investor. Apex Holdings is just the public face. The real capital came from defense contracts, cybersecurity networks... things the government doesn't even have names for yet."
Maya stepped forward, ignoring the rifle pointed vaguely in her direction. "Julian, what is this? Who are these people?"
Julian raised a single hand, signaling the operatives to hold their position. He walked slowly toward Maya, stopping just inches away. The scent of rain and expensive cologne enveloped her, but underneath it was the sharp, metallic tang of ozone and danger.
"Ten years ago, when you threw me out, I didn't go to Silicon Valley to code apps, Maya," Julian said softly, his voice meant only for her ears. "I took a job with a black-ops cybersecurity contractor. I built the architecture that tracks international cartels and corrupt state actors."
Maya stared at him, her eyes wide with disbelief. "You... you're a spy? Or a mercenary?"
"I'm a survivor," Julian corrected quietly. "And the men who funded my early research—the ones who tried to bury me when I tried to walk away five years ago—just figured out where I parked my car."
Before Maya could process the terrifying weight of his words, the overhead lights of the penthouse flickered violently twice and then went completely black. Emergency backup power kicked in a second later, bathing the room in a harsh, bleeding red glow.

From the windows behind them came a sudden, deafening sound of shattering glass as a heavy explosive charge blew the reinforced perimeter wall inward.
