Chapter 5 - The Architect's Shadow

The conference room emptied in less than three minutes. The executives scurried out like rats from a sinking ship, clutching cardboard boxes and frantically whispering into their phones. Only Arthur Vance remained, sitting slumped at the end of the massive table, looking ten years older than he had twenty minutes ago. Julian stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, staring out at the glittering skyline of the city below. Maya remained near the door, her arms crossed tightly over her red dress, feeling like an absolute ghost in her own kingdom.
"You ruined them," Maya said quietly, breaking the heavy silence that had settled over the penthouse. "You systematically dismantled four decades of corporate legacy just to settle a grudge."
Julian turned away from the glass, his hands sliding into his trouser pockets. "I didn't dismantle a legacy, Maya. I pruned a dead tree. Those men were corrupt, and you knew it. You spent the last three years fighting them from the inside, getting your ideas stolen and your promotions blocked."
"That was my battle to fight!" Maya snapped, stepping forward, the restraint finally snapping in her voice. "I earned my position here! I didn't need a white knight riding in with a half-billion-dollar check to rescue me!"
"Rescue you?" Julian let out a short, humorless laugh, shaking his head. "Maya, look around. I didn't come here to rescue you. I came here to see if you were still the same woman who traded loyalty for a safety net."
Arthur Vance cleared his throat weakly from the end of the table, drawing their attention. The old man looked up, his eyes dull and defeated.
"What happens to the firm, Mr. Vance—or whatever your real name is?" Arthur asked, his voice shaking. "You own the debt, you own the equity. What do you want with Vanguard Capital?"
Julian walked slowly toward the aging CEO, stopping just a few feet from his chair. "Vanguard is going to pivot. We are going to fund green-energy infrastructure, clean tech, and independent startups founded by people who don't come from generational wealth. People who actually know what it's like to starve for an idea."
Arthur nodded slowly, too broken to fight back. "And... and Maya?"
Julian didn't answer immediately. He turned his head, locking eyes with Maya across the expansive room. The amber city light caught the sharp angles of his face, casting deep shadows across his jaw.
"Maya is the new managing director," Julian said smoothly, his voice carrying an undeniable finality. "She runs the entire portfolio starting tomorrow morning."
Maya stared at him, her chest rising and falling rapidly as the implications of his words settled over her. She had everything she had ever dreamed of, handed to her on a silver platter by the very man she had abandoned a decade ago. But as she took a step toward him, the heavy oak double doors of the penthouse burst open with a loud bang, echoing through the empty floor.

Three armed men in dark tactical gear stepped out of the private elevator, their faces concealed by black balaclavas, automatic rifles raised and pointed directly at Julian's chest.
