Chapter 10 - The Crossfire Trap

Julian froze mid-step, his sidearm still raised toward the shadows near the exit ramp. Maya stood paralyzed beside the open gull-wing door of the hypercar, her hand still resting on the leather steering wheel. From the darkness behind a concrete support pillar, a tall man in a dark trench coat stepped forward, holding a silenced pistol aimed directly at Maya’s chest. The man’s face was half-shadowed, but his sharp, pale eyes gleamed with sadistic amusement.

"Drop the weapon, Julian," the man said, his voice smooth and devoid of any emotion. "We both know you can't clear the angle before my round clears the chamber."

Julian’s jaw tightened, the muscles in his neck flexing visibly under his collar. He lowered his sidearm slowly, letting it drop to the concrete floor with a heavy, unceremonious thud.

"Vaughn," Julian said, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous growl. "I wondered which of the directors sent you to clean house after the board dissolved."

Vaughn chuckled softly, stepping closer into the dim overhead light. "Arthur Vance was just a puppet, Julian. We owned his debt long before you started buying up his paper. You thought you were playing chess against a failing corporation, but you were just walking back into our parlor."

Maya’s breath caught in her throat. The realization hit her like a physical blow: Arthur Vance hadn't just been a corrupt CEO; he was an active asset for the very Syndicate that had been hunting Julian for a decade. Vanguard Capital wasn't just a financial institution; it was a front for global intelligence laundering.

"Step away from the vehicle, Maya," Vaughn ordered, keeping the suppressed pistol locked on her chest. "The boss wants to have a little chat with our favorite runaway programmer."

Julian took a slow, deliberate step to the left, subtly shifting his body positioning to place himself directly between Vaughn's line of sight and Maya.

"She has nothing to do with this, Vaughn," Julian said calmly, his voice steady despite the obvious danger. "Let her walk out of the garage. The keys are in the car. Take the core encryption drives and leave her out of it."

Vaughn smiled, shaking his head. "You really think we're that naive, Julian? After ten years of chasing ghosts, we don't leave loose ends. Especially not the ones wearing red dresses."

Vaughn's finger tightened on the trigger, the tension in the garage snapping to a razor's edge. But before the hammer could fall, the overhead fluorescent lights shattered simultaneously in a shower of sparks, plunging the entire parking garage into absolute pitch blackness.
