Chapter 9 - The Iron Lock

The heavy metallic click of the exterior padlock sealing shut echoed inside the boiler room like the dropping of a guillotine blade. Edward lunged forward, slamming his shoulder against the thick steel door with a force that rattled the industrial hinges, but the reinforced deadbolt held firm.

"Open this door, you little brat!" Edward roared, his veins bulging at his temples as he hammered his fists against the metal panels.

"Open it or I swear I'll flood this entire basement with boiling steam!"

Arthur rushed over from the open storm drain, his face twisted in absolute panic as he ripped the intercom microphone off the wall.

"Julian! Listen to me!" Arthur yelled into the small speaker box, his polished billionaire persona completely incinerated by desperation.

"You don't know what you're doing! That drain leads directly to the municipal reservoir basin! The floodgates open automatically at midnight!"

From the rusted speaker grille on the wall, a burst of static hissed before Julian’s small, calm voice filtered through the room. There was no crying in his tone now—only a terrifying, cold composure that sounded nothing like a seven-year-old boy.

"You told the board I was a lie wrapped in a beige silk bow," Julian’s voice recited evenly, echoing off the concrete walls.

"Clara taught me how to read the foundation ledgers, Arthur. I know about the offshore accounts. I know about the fire. And I know you don't have a brother named Edward—he died in the East Wing collapse twenty years ago."

Edward froze mid-strike against the door, his hand dropping slowly to his side as he exchanged a horrifying, disbelieving look with his twin.

"How... how does he know about the collapse?" Edward whispered, his voice trembling for the first time.

"The records were sealed by a federal judge!"

"Because I didn't smuggle him out of the slums, Arthur," Clara gasped from the floor, leaning against the concrete wall as she wiped blood from her chin, a triumphant, exhausted smile spreading across her face.

"He wasn't an orphan you found. He was the only survivor you and your brother tried to erase to claim your uncle's complete inheritance."

Arthur spun around, his eyes wide and unhinged, pointing a shaking finger at the maid.

"She's lying! She's trying to manipulate you, Julian!" Arthur screamed into the intercom.

"Don't listen to her! Come back inside right now or the police will find you down there!"

"The police are already standing outside the East Gate," Julian’s voice replied smoothly from the speaker, followed by the faint, distant sound of heavy sirens wailing through the storm above.

"And Detective Vance just signed the federal arrest warrants for both of you."

Before either brother could react, a deafening mechanical whine filled the boiler room. High above their heads, the massive industrial valves of the steam boilers began to spin open on their own, hissing plumes of scalding white vapor shooting out from the rusted pipes and instantly filling the room with suffocating, blinding heat.

Edward coughed violently, shielding his face as the temperature skyrocketed.

"The override code!" Edward yelled over the roaring steam.

"Use the master terminal on the desk! He's hacking the facility mainframe from the security console in the drainage junction!"

Arthur scrambled frantically across the slick floor toward the rusted metal workbench where the silver serving tray still sat next to the blinking hard drive. He slammed his hands onto the keyboard, typing furiously—only for the screen to flash a blinding red warning message:

ACCESS DENIED. ASSET TERMINATION IN PROGRESS.

And then, above the roar of the steam, the heavy mechanical grinding of the storm drain's outer intake valves began to echo through the walls, signaling that millions of gallons of freezing river water had just been unleashed straight toward their location.
