Chapter 5 - The Voice in the Dark

The absolute blackness of the grand ballroom felt heavy, almost physical, pressing down on the chests of every terrified elite trapped inside. In the split second after the raspy voice faded into the howling wind, a blinding strobe light cut through the dark from the shattered French doors. It was the handheld tactical spotlight of one of the police officers, casting erratic, frantic white beams across the vaulted ceiling. Julian buried his face so deep into Clara’s black-and-white maid's uniform that he stopped breathing entirely, his small body shaking uncontrollably. Clara didn't dare move a muscle, her eyes straining against the blinding glare to find the source of the whisper that had just called her by name.
"Who's there? Identify yourself!" Detective Vance’s voice echoed sharply, the metallic click of his firearm clearing its holster cutting through the heavy rain.
A sharp, metallic scraping sound came from the center of the room—the slow, deliberate drag of a heavy shoe across the polished marble floor. The tactical light swept downward, illuminating the exact spot where Arthur Sterling had been kneeling a moment ago. The charred silver locket was gone, replaced by a single, pristine white handkerchief soaked in fresh, dark crimson blood.
Arthur stumbled backward into the beam of light, his hands raised in surrender, his tuxedo jacket stained with soot and water.
"I swear to God, I didn't move it!" Arthur shouted, his voice verging on hysteria as he looked directly at the detective.
"Someone else is in this room! Someone is manipulating every single piece of this trap!"
Victoria’s panicked voice shrieked from the far corner of the ballroom, near the grand piano.
"He's lying! He's always played the victim while laundering the foundation funds through offshore shell companies named after a dead child! Shoot him, Detective! He's a flight risk!"
"Shut up, Victoria!" Charles roared from the shadows, the sound of his expensive cufflinks clinking together as he lunged forward.
"If Arthur goes down, the entire board goes down with him for signing the falsified adoption waivers in Zurich!"
Vance ignored the screaming elites, his boots splashing in the puddles tracked in from the storm as he closed the distance toward the center of the room. He knelt down, using his gloved hand to touch the blood-soaked handkerchief. He lifted it to his nose, his professional expression instantly twisting into one of profound disgust and shock.
"This isn't old blood," Vance muttered, looking up at Arthur with narrowed, accusatory eyes.
"This was drawn less than sixty seconds ago. And according to the biometric registry... it matches the DNA profile of the child standing right behind your maid."
Clara’s breath hitched violently. Without a single word, she grabbed Julian’s small hand, bolted past the stunned police officer, and dove straight through the heavy velvet drapes into the dark, rain-soaked maze of the estate's interior corridors.
