Chapter 7 - The Silver Dome

The fluorescent light of the boiler room hummed a high-pitched, agonizing note that vibrated inside Clara’s skull. Arthur Sterling stood blocking the exit, his tailored black tuxedo ruined by mud and soot, holding the silver serving tray with the dome cover balanced perfectly on his flat palm. His face was entirely devoid of emotion, a terrifying, mask-like blankness that looked nothing like the frantic, desperate man who had begged for mercy in the grand ballroom just minutes earlier.
"You played your part well, Clara," Arthur said, his voice disturbingly calm, cutting through the roar of the massive industrial furnaces behind him.
"Taking the boy in, hiding him in the east wing quarters, feeding him meals straight from the master kitchen... you almost convinced me you actually cared about his welfare."
Clara backed away slowly, her spine hitting the cold iron door handle behind her, her chest heaving as she raised her hands defensively.
"You... you knew all along," she whispered, the horrifying realization finally clicking into place in her mind.
"The DNA reports, the board's panic, the police raid... it was all a staged performance to flush out whoever was trying to blackmail the foundation."
Arthur let out a low, humorless chuckle that didn't reach his dead eyes. He took one slow, deliberate step forward, the silver tray gleaming menacingly under the flickering light.
"Blackmail is such an ugly word, Clara. Let's call it a necessary audit. When a company is built on a foundation of absolute lies, sometimes you have to burn the house down to see who survives the ash."
"Where is he?" Clara demanded, her voice rising in desperate defiance as she braced herself to lunge past him.
"What did you do with the real heirs, Arthur? The children from the fire seven years ago?"
Arthur tilted his head slightly, a dark, wicked smile finally cracking his rigid composure.
"They never burned, Clara. That was the first lie we told the press to keep the stock prices stable. But Julian... Julian was never meant to be part of the bloodline equation at all."
Before Clara could process the terrifying weight of his words, a heavy shadow detached itself from the stacked piping behind the industrial boilers. A second man stepped out into the light, wearing an identical black tuxedo and a matching black bow tie. He held a heavy leather briefcase in one hand, and as he stepped into the light, Clara’s blood ran cold.
It was Arthur Sterling.
No—not Arthur. The man standing by the boiler had a subtle scar across his left jawline that the billionaire never possessed. A twin. An identical twin brother erased from every public registry before the foundation was even incorporated.
"Welcome to the family reunion, Clara," the second Arthur sneered, lifting the dome cover off the silver tray.
Inside the tray wasn't food. It was a digital hard drive blinking a steady, rhythmic red light, wired directly to a detonator sitting on top of the Sterling Foundation's master financial ledger.
"Now," the twin whispered, stepping forward to block the exit entirely.

"Let's see if the boy inherits his real father's courage, or if he screams just like his mother did before we locked her in the vault."
